Schmilka: Hiking, Nature and a Historic Mill
Accommodation in Schmilka
Schmilka brings together nature trails, hiking routes and cultural activities with a historic mill. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around whether you’re mainly interested in exploring the landscape, following a specific route, or learning about local history and brewing. The destinations differ in theme, route length and the time required.
Nature Trails and Hikes
In Saxon Switzerland National Park, the “Path to Wilderness” consists of two separate educational trails. They show how nature responds to disturbances and changes and develops anew without human intervention. Schmilka is a suitable starting point for these trails. The shortest route is via the Wurzelweg and Lehnsteig trails and takes about 50 to 60 minutes. This time is an estimate; trail conditions may affect accessibility.
At the edge of Schmilka, towards Großer Winterberg, a National Park information center provides information about the history of rock climbing. It also covers requirements for protecting nature and rocks in Saxon Switzerland National Park. This means your plans can include not only a route through the landscape, but also information about the development of nature and how to treat the rocks.
Another route crosses the border from Hřensko to Schmilka. The national park hiking trail is just under three kilometers long and joins the Grenzweg near Schmilka. It officially opened to hikers on April 11, 2026. For winter hiking, the Schmilkaer Kessel offers a different option: this difficult circular route is 7.98 kilometers long and starts and ends in Schmilka. Winter conditions may affect its accessibility, so check current trail conditions before setting out.
Mill, Brewery and Culture
The historic watermill in Schmilka dates back to 1665, and the Painters’ Way passes directly through the mill. Tours there explain traditional working methods and how the mill operates. The organic brewery offers expert-led tours of the brewery twice a week. As the specific days of the week should be checked before your trip, it’s worth looking up the dates for your stay. Cultural evenings are also held regularly in Schmilka; check the event schedule for your travel dates.
Heilige Stiege and the Elbe Cycle Route
The Heilige Stiege connects Heringsgrund with Reitsteig on the Affenstein massif. The trail, originally built in the 19th century, is around 190 meters high and has about 900 wooden and steel steps. From the “Heilige Stiege” viewpoint, you can see across the Elbe Valley, the Schrammsteine and the wooded surroundings of the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz. When planning, you can therefore take into account both the specific connection between the trails and the viewpoint as separate aspects; the condition of the steps may vary.
For cyclists, the Elbe Cycle Route passes directly through Schmilka. Regional connections include the S-Bahn, buses, ferries and hiking boats. From Bad Schandau, take the S-Bahn and then the historic “Lena” ferry, dating from 1927, to Schmilka. Check the ferry timetable for your travel date before setting out. This lets you plan hiking, cycling, culture and your journey according to your specific plans for your stay.
