Frauenstein: Discover the Silbermann Museum and castle ruins
Accommodation in Frauenstein
Frauenstein offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: Gottfried Silbermann’s organ-building craftsmanship, the castle ruins and hiking trails through natural areas. Cultural history, a seasonal visit to the castle and outdoor tours can be explored separately.
Cultural history surrounding Silbermann and the castle
The Gottfried Silbermann Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the organ builder, his family and his musical surroundings. It also presents the principles of organ building. At its center is a faithful replica of the Silbermann organ from Etzdorf; the lower floor focuses on the history of Frauenstein. The museum’s themes thus range from music and instrument making to the history of the town.
Frauenstein Castle ruins date back to around 1200, when the area was settled on the orders of the Margrave of Meissen. They are open to visitors from May 1 to October 31, weather permitting. Admission tickets are issued at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum. Check visiting arrangements and weather conditions before you travel.
The Friends of Frauenstein Castle association offers experience tours exploring the lives of knights and robbers. Younger visitors can also meet the castle ghost “Vrouwin.” The programs are subject to the organizer’s availability.
Concert series take place at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum, Frauenstein’s town church and Nassau village church. The program features international and regional artists. Concert programs may change, so check the dates for your stay.
Relaxation and outdoor activities
Frauenstein and its district of Nassau hold the designation “state-recognized health resort”; this recognition was confirmed in 2022. In Nassau, the fitness trail offers a family-friendly outdoor activity. As facilities may be maintained or changed, it is advisable to check their condition before visiting.
Hiking with different points of focus
The Frauenstein–Nassau Silbermann circular hike is listed as 15.6 kilometers long, with a walking time of four hours. It is considered unsuitable for bicycles and strollers and passes the Röthenhübel viewpoint, which offers views across the Ore Mountains. Another tour, the Talsperre-Lichtenberg–Schillermühlenweg circular trail, runs from Frauenstein via Burkersdorf to the forebay of the Lichtenberg Dam. The return route follows the Gimmlitz along natural trails. While a time estimate is given for the Silbermann loop, the other trail is defined by its stops at the forebay and along the Gimmlitz. Check trail conditions and markings in advance for both hikes, as these may change.
Castle park and natural surroundings
The protected FND Schlosspark Frauenstein area covers about two hectares, lies 150 meters north of Frauenstein and borders the castle wall. It is located at the transition between nutrient-poor granite porphyry and the adjacent gneiss. A semi-natural mixed beech forest with sycamore maple, ash and wych elm has developed in the area. Numerous hiking trails pass through it. If you want to plan a tour featuring a named viewpoint, you’ll find one on the Silbermann circular hike; the Lichtenberg–Schillermühlenweg, by contrast, runs via Burkersdorf to the forebay and follows the Gimmlitz on the return route.
