Wildenfels lies in a hilly, green landscape framed by the ridges of the Ore Mountains. Local attractions include Wildenfels Castle, three churches and the Niedere Schönauer Mill. When planning your visit, it is worth exploring two sides of the town: the art of its castle and churches, and the protected landscape with its various hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Wildenfels, these highlights can help you choose the focus of your visit.

Wildenfels Castle and its cultural program

Wildenfels Castle stands on a mountain spur above the town and shapes its appearance. The Chinese Cabinet features a richly detailed wall covering with chinoiserie silk appliqués. The Blue Salon preserves a silk wallpaper with colorful embroidery and an interior influenced by oriental styles. The two rooms offer a glimpse of different designs within the castle.

The castle is home to museum facilities and a contemporary gallery with exhibitions for visitors. You can explore Wildenfels Castle with trained guides; check which tours are available before you arrive. The cultural program includes concerts, literary evenings and castle festivals. Dates for individual events may vary. If you would like to combine your visit with one of these events, it is a good idea to check the program.

Churches in the municipality of Wildenfels

The districts also offer destinations with their own art history. Härtensdorf, a district of the municipality of Wildenfels, is home to the Church of the Three Marys. Its artworks include an altarpiece by Peter Breuer and epitaphs of the Lords of Wildenfels. Schönau, also in the municipality of Wildenfels, is home to St. Rochus Church, with altar figures by Peter Breuer. These specific works and artists’ names add to the picture of the three churches that are among the local attractions.

The Wildenfels Hills and their trails

The Wildenfels Hills are a protected landscape area between Wildenfels, Hartenstein and Langenweißbach. They stretch from the Mulde floodplain, via Aschberg, to Augustenhöhe; the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde forms their southern boundary. Around the limestone quarries, the landscape is part of the Natura 2000 network and is protected as an FFH site.

The hiking routes described here differ in their course and theme. The Museum in the Landscape route leads to the Schönau lime kiln, quarries on Grünauer Höhe and a lime-ring kiln before returning to Wildenfels. The ten-kilometer Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Hiking Trail) runs from Zschocken through Wildenfels to Schönau. A circular route leads from Wildenfels via Langenweißbach and back; nine information panels explain the Wildenfels Hills. The options therefore range from sites connected with lime processing to a route with a specified length and a loop with information about the landscape.

A local circular trail is partly inaccessible because one section crosses private property. Check the specific route before setting out.

Finding your way around

The local history room by the park pond tells visitors about Wildenfels as a “gingerbread town.” It complements the themes of the castle, churches and landscape with another perspective on the town.
