Churches and Local History

The Church of the Holy Cross in Ortmannsdorf was built in 1856. It has around 600 seats and two galleries. In Thurm, the Baroque church was consecrated in 1731; it is one of Saxony’s three “Urban Churches.” Its west tower has an open lantern at a height of 48 metres. The churches therefore differ in the features that stand out most: in Ortmannsdorf, these are the year of construction and the galleries; in Thurm, the Baroque character and the detail on the tower.

The Mülsen St. Niclas Local History Museum displays more than 1,000 exhibits reflecting the period around the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. It also recreates family life in a typical home of small-scale craftsmen or workers. Connections to mining, crafts and agriculture root this perspective on everyday life in the Mülsengrund valley. If you are more interested in ways of life and work than in individual buildings, the museum offers a different perspective on local history.

Comparing Leisure Activities

The Mülsen outdoor swimming pool has a swimming pool, a non-swimmers’ pool and a baby pool, as well as a children’s playground, beach volleyball and food and drink. The pool holds more than 3,400 cubic metres and is considered the largest pool in western Saxony. Its different pools and additional facilities give it a distinct profile compared with the other leisure options in the area.

Arena E offers indoor races with electric karts and electric pit bikes. The outdoor track has variable lengths from 450 to 1,315 metres; there, you can ride karts with combustion engines and electric pit bikes. The specific differences to consider when choosing between the options are the vehicle types mentioned and the variable track lengths outdoors.

Genusshof offers two escape rooms, a café, beach volleyball and an outdoor tablet-based treasure hunt. It also has the 18-hole Pit Pat table-minigolf course. While Arena E offers races with karts and pit bikes, Genusshof combines puzzle activities and Pit Pat with a café and beach volleyball. This makes it possible to distinguish the leisure activities by type rather than grouping them together simply as general attractions.

Walks, Mill and Getting There

Mülsen lies among the gentle hills of the foothills of the Ore Mountains. A walk through Mülsen St. Jacob can take in historic half-timbered houses, former hard-coal headframes, the Martin-Hoop-Werk IV spoil heap and the steep, wooded eastern slope of the Mülsengrund valley. The walk thus brings together the built heritage of the town, traces of mining and a landscape feature of the Mülsengrund valley.

In Thurm, the fully preserved milling equipment at the Uhlig Mill can be viewed by prior arrangement. This visit is subject to a specific condition: arrange it in advance.

Mülsen has no direct rail connection; the nearest major railway stations are in Zwickau and Glauchau. Check rail connections and the status of the stations again before travelling. This may be important when choosing how to get there and planning your stay.
