Glauchau brings together historic buildings, green spaces and nature experiences in one city. When planning a stay, you can choose different focuses: culture in the castle and city centre, walks in the parks, and leisure activities at the reservoir.

Castles and historic city centre

The Glauchau castle complex is one of the largest castle complexes in Saxony and dates from the first half of the 16th century. Glauchau’s castles are also a cultural centre that hosts events across a range of genres. If you want an event to shape your stay, check the relevant dates in advance.

The historic market square is the heart of the historic city centre. Historic and cultural attractions and architecturally significant buildings define the surrounding area. Weekly markets, fresh produce markets, the annual Christmas market and the town festival are held in the market square. If you are travelling for a market or event, check the specific dates in advance.

Parks and paths through green spaces

The castle park is believed to be Glauchau’s oldest park and dates from the 18th century. Paths pass old trees and offer views of Forderglauchau Castle and Hinterglauchau Castle. The Gründelpark, covering around 9.8 hectares, is a natural continuation of the castle park and is used by walkers and cyclists as a recreational area.

The Glauchau reservoir

The Glauchau reservoir has a water surface of 40 hectares and is known for its diverse wildlife. A 3.2-kilometre circular path runs through the natural landscape around the reservoir. This specified distance can help you plan an outing.

Leisure activities at the lake include sailing, canoeing, fishing, tennis, archery, jogging, walking and cycling. This means that activities on the water and on land are both available. Check the availability of specific activities before your visit, as individual facilities may be subject to change.

Woodland between Glauchau and Lichtenstein

Between Glauchau and Lichtenstein lies the RĂĽmpfwald, covering around 750 hectares and the second-largest continuous woodland in the Erzgebirge Basin. It has numerous forest paths and is a popular local recreation and hiking area. A 3.2-kilometre circular path runs around the reservoir; in the RĂĽmpfwald, the large area and numerous forest paths define the natural landscape. The two excursion options therefore differ: one offers a measured circular route by the water, while the other is an extensive woodland with many paths.

Church, organ and other landmarks

St. Georgen Town Church houses a preserved organ by Gottfried Silbermann, completed in 1730. Tours of the church, organ and tower can be booked through the parish office. It is best to arrange your preferred date directly with them.

The underground passages are also part of Glauchau’s cultural heritage. The Bismarck Tower serves both as a viewing tower and a water tower. Together, these places add church music history, underground cultural heritage and a landmark with a dual purpose to the cityscape.
