Ruppersdorf offers a variety of themes for a stay: architectural history, a route through the village and the landscape along the stream. If you are looking for a hotel in Ruppersdorf, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in historic buildings, a specific route or natural habitats. The village’s development and the historical names of the manors also offer their own starting points for planning your trip.

Church, Castles and Village History

Ruppersdorf Church was built before 1324 and has the oldest set of bells in Upper Lusatia. The Lower Castle is a former moated castle with a castle pond. Other sights include the Upper Castle, numerous half-timbered houses in a unique architectural style, and a railway viaduct. The construction date and bells give the church two specific historical points of reference; at the Lower Castle, its former status as a moated castle and the pond go together.

Ruppersdorf developed as a Waldhufendorf, a type of forest-strip village, and was still divided between the manors of Nieder- and Oberruppersdorf in the 19th century. The settlement’s development and its later division between the two manors thus stand alongside one another as distinct aspects of local history. The water castle and Castle Niederruppersdorf were mentioned as a knight’s seat in 1492 and designated a manor from 1562. The Oberruppersdorf manor was established around 1623 as a result of a division of the estate; its manor house was built at the beginning of the 18th century. These dates refer to different milestones: for Niederruppersdorf, its mention and later designation; for Oberruppersdorf, the manor’s establishment and the manor house’s construction. Seventy years separate the 1492 mention as a knight’s seat and the 1562 designation as a manor.

Route Through Ruppersdorf

The route “Obercunnersdorf – Eibau – Ruppersdorf – Herrnhut – Obercunnersdorf” passes through Ruppersdorf. The sequence of villages shows the route across several places; within Ruppersdorf, the route approaches via the district of Ninive and passes the church as it descends along the village street to the smithy. On the route described, you also follow a signposted cycle path to Herrnhut. This names both Ruppersdorf’s place in the sequence of villages and specific orientation points for the section through the village. Check the local wayfinding signs before setting off.

Stream, Biotopes and Landscape

Protected biotopes in Ruppersdorf include the near-natural, warm-summer Ruppersdorf stream with alder-ash woodland in its floodplain and spring areas, wet meadows rich in sedges and rushes, and wet scrubland. There is also a near-natural pond or pool by the moated castle. The habitats mentioned therefore include stream and spring areas as well as wet meadows, scrubland and a body of water by the moated castle. The view of the settlement landscape is different: farmsteads, scattered across meadows, follow the village stream eastwards. Protected biotope areas and the distribution of farmsteads can thus be considered as distinct landscape features.
