Weißenberg-Weicha: Nature, History and Village Life
Accommodation in Weißenberg-Weicha
Weißenberg-Weicha offers visitors a variety of things to discover: the landscape of Gröditzer Skala, a named circular hiking trail, a marked cycling tour and a lively village events calendar. When planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus on nature and outdoor activities, local history or an event in the village programme.
Gröditzer Skala: Nature and History
The Weicha side of Gröditzer Skala was designated a nature reserve in 1938; since 1961, the protection has applied to the entire Skala. For hikers, the landscape offers rock formations, open woodland, water and wooden bridges as part of a nature experience. Around 1760, the Weicha side was transformed into a park-like landscape under Wolf Rudolf von Schönberg and his son Christian.
Hiking and Cycling
The easy Felsen.Mühlen.Pfefferkuchen circular hiking trail is 11.12 kilometres long. Parking is available for this route by the old park wall of the former manor house in Weicha. The Bautzen-Weißenberg tour follows the “Sorbische Impressionen” (“Sorbic Impressions”) route markers through Cortnitz, Gröditz and Weicha to Weißenberg’s market square. The two options differ in format: the hiking trail is a circular route of a stated length, while the cycling tour passes through several places before reaching the market square.
Village Life and Events
An initiative by two local associations and agricultural businesses presents Weicha as a “working museum village”. Annual farm festivals, village festivals and the Open Village Day attract visitors. The village programme thus offers a different reason to visit than hiking or cycling tours.
The Weichaer Hof regularly hosts events and weekly culinary offerings; throughout the year, the programme also includes farm and family celebrations. Dates vary, so check which events coincide with your stay before travelling.
Activities and Regional Cuisine
The small riding school affiliated with the Weichaer Hof offers riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders. You may need to enquire in advance to make arrangements. Groups can prepare a meal together on request and then eat it at a set table. This means you can include both physical activity and group activities in your stay, without this implying a fixed event date.
The restaurant at the Weichaer Hof describes its cuisine as Lusatian. According to the restaurant, it uses only fresh ingredients and prefers produce sourced directly from producers in the region. This local culinary focus complements the hiking, cycling and events themes.
Historical Traces
The manor house of the Weicha estate was built around 1700 under Anna Helena von Nimptsch. At Mosesfelsen, there is an inscription containing an excerpt from verses by Horace. Together with the transformation of the Weicha side of Gröditzer Skala into a park-like landscape around 1760, these historic features offer different insights into the history of the place and its landscape.
