When planning a stay in Stollberg, you can focus on different themes: churches and local history, cultural activities, or outdoor trails. Specific points of interest include historic buildings, opportunities to enjoy theatre and discover new things, and circular routes through the surrounding area.

Churches and History in Stollberg

The Marienkirche, also known as the Church of St Mary, Beatae Virginis Mariae and, colloquially, the “Church of the Dead,” is the oldest building in the town. It is a historic monument in the Romanesque style. Its ceiling and ribbed vault paintings are of particular significance: they were uncovered during renovation work and are unique in their character in Saxony. St. Jakobikirche, also known as Stollberg Market Church or Jakobikirche, is the market church dedicated to the Apostle James. Its imposing tower has watched over the market square for centuries.

The old town has a historical walking tour and guided town tours. A 360° tour offers an additional way to explore from afar. Since 2024, the Stalburc site has housed a permanent exhibition about the Hoheneck Women's Prison Memorial. It commemorates women who were persecuted for political reasons and imprisoned in Hoheneck. Stollberg’s historical story therefore encompasses both its old churches and an exhibition commemorating those affected by the women's prison.

Culture, Theatre and Discovery

In the centre of Stollberg is Bürgergarten, a cultural centre in the Arts and Crafts Jugendstil style. It provides a venue for a range of events: concerts, shows, trade fairs, conferences, exhibitions, corporate presentations and wedding celebrations. The programme thus ranges from cultural events to business and private occasions.

At Theater Burattino, theatre enthusiasts aged 6 to 99 can take part in amateur theatre in their free time. It also offers children and young people training in aesthetic education. Phänomenia has a different focus: discovery and exploration take centre stage, with interactive and exciting experiences enriching the learning process. Those interested in theatre practice or educational activities will therefore find a range of cultural experiences in Stollberg.

Circular Trails and Cycling Route

The Green Trail Stollberg is a circular route more than 20 km long. It passes several municipal parks, orchards and bodies of water, as well as the Phänomenia learning and discovery centre and the environmental education centre of the Stollberg e.V. Beekeepers’ Association in Mitteldorf. By summer 2026, the route had been equipped as part of an award-winning simul+ creative project with numerous habitats for wild insects, benches, educational panels and an energy-independent bicycle charging station. As route infrastructure can change, it is worth checking the latest route information when planning your trip.

The Stollberg Reservoir Cycling Loop offers a shorter and different option for comparison: it is a short, moderately challenging 10.6 km cycling loop, mostly on asphalt. The Green Trail is therefore more than twice as long. The cycling loop leads out of the town centre past the Querenbach Reservoir, through Bürgerwald forest and back to town, with a view from Goldene Höhe along the way. When choosing between the two routes, distance, mode of travel and the route features described here offer practical guidance.
