Discover Neudorf
Accommodation in Neudorf
Neudorf stretches along the River Sehma at an elevation of 600 to 800 metres. It is one of the highest forest-strip villages in the Ore Mountains. It is surrounded by the Ore Mountains’ largest contiguous forest area, touched only by hiking trails and forestry roads. Your stay can focus on different things: local history, the soup museum, or trails and activities in the Fichtelberg and nature park area.
Village Church and Soup Museum
Neudorf’s village church was built in 1599. Its oldest and most valuable work of art is a group of figures depicting the Crucifixion by Peter Breuer, dating from 1567—making it older than the church itself. On Advent Saturdays, the tower musicians perform in front of the church at 6 pm; the exact programme may vary.
The Neudorf Soup Museum is Germany’s only soup museum. The district’s tourist information office is also located in the museum. It offers advice and arranges excursions, provides information about leisure activities, and has tourist information, maps and souvenirs available. It also sells tickets for certain events and provides comprehensive tourist advice throughout your stay.
Hiking Trails, Tours and Railway
Neudorf is an ideal starting point for hiking, cycling and skiing tours in the Fichtelberg and nature park area. The Bimmelbahn Adventure Trail is a hiking trail that runs parallel to the Fichtelberg Railway and passes through Neudorf. Another tour with a named starting and finishing point is the “To the Roof of Saxony” circular hike: it begins and ends at a car park opposite the church in Sehmatal-Neudorf.
The information about the two trails offers different kinds of guidance: the Adventure Trail is described as passing through Neudorf and running parallel to the railway, while the circular hike has a specified starting and finishing point. The Fichtelberg Railway itself also stops at Neudorf station. Its route runs from Cranzahl to Kurort Oberwiesenthal. The hiking trails and railway line can therefore be considered separately as points of reference for getting oriented in the area, without combining them into a single route.
Things to See and Short Activities
At “Zum Weihrichkarzl,” you can make your own “Weihrichkarzle” by booking in advance. You can add a scent of your choice to the dough. There is also a short guided tour of the demonstration workshop, with a brief look at tin pressing. Before your visit, check the current rules for taking the tour.
There is a Kneipp footbath pool on Wiesenweg in the Neudorf district. It can be combined with a walk as a short outdoor wellness activity. In addition to longer tours, you can therefore enjoy a brief time outdoors or visit the demonstration workshop as other ways to spend the day.
Seasonal Events
The Soup Land Fair takes place in Neudorf in October. The programme includes, among other things, the election of a soup king or queen and a competition to find the champion soup-pot puller. In December, the traditional “Lichtlohmd” Christmas event takes place in the Neudorf district. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the exact dates before travelling: event days may vary, and the programme for the tower musicians may also differ.
The different points of interest can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: the church and museum, a tour through the countryside, a look at how “Weihrichkarzle” are made, or a seasonal event. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these sides of Neudorf matters most for your trip.
