Discover Großharthau: Hiking Trails and Castle Park
Accommodation in Großharthau
Großharthau offers two clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: hiking trails and the historic castle park. When choosing a hotel in Großharthau, you can decide whether to focus your stay more on the trails or on the park grounds. Route details, trail markings, and specific features of the park provide practical guidance.
Hiking Trails and Connections
The Wesenitztal Trail runs from Großharthau station to Stolpen and follows the Wesenitz River. The route is approximately eight kilometers long. The Wesenitztal Trail is part of the longer Wesenitz Hiking Trail, which runs from the source of the Wesenitz in the Hohwald to the river's mouth in the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland. Check route information locally before setting out.
The Westlausitz section of the Wesenitztal Trail is marked with a green stripe. Check the markings locally, as trail markers can change.
For much of its length, the Seeligstadt-Frankenthal Trail runs through the Massenei woodland and is also marked with a green stripe. The color alone therefore does not distinguish it from the green-marked Westlausitz section of the Wesenitztal Trail; when navigating, also pay attention to the route name. The Seeligstadt-Frankenthal Trail passes the Wolfgang Marschner bench, which may be relocated or replaced over time. There is a rest area and an information board at Großer Stern; facilities at trail points like these may change over time. Popeldamm Pond lies directly on the trail. If these points are important to your plans, check the markings and facilities locally.
At Beigut, the Seeligstadt-Frankenthal Trail ends at a connection to the Gruna Hiking Trail. Other connections from the trail lead toward Rammenau and Bischofswerda. Check trail connections against the current signage before your hike.
The hiking connection between Großharthau and Großröhrsdorf links up with the Westlausitz Circular Trail and the Lichtenberg Trail. In Großröhrsdorf, this route connects with the Wesenitztal Trail at the station, where public transport is available. Check train and local public transport connections at this station before your trip.
Castle Park and Historic Grounds
The protected ensemble of Großharthau Manor and Castle Park includes a gatehouse, farm buildings, a forge, and a riding hall. It also includes former castle vaults, orangery buildings, and a former castle garden nursery, as well as bridges, sculptures, and park features. A Neo-Baroque park axis and castle ponds complete the grounds. The ensemble thus encompasses both buildings and former uses, as well as landscaped park and water features.
Großharthau Castle Park is listed as a historic park and is freely accessible. Its Baroque layout is arranged across three terraces. Features include Permoser figures, an eight-meter-high fountain, and Baroque linden avenues; there is also a gondola pond. Gondola rides are available on summer weekends. If you plan to take a ride, time your visit for this period. You can then take in the park's design, from the arrangement of the terraces to individual art and water features.
