Dresden: Architecture, Museums and Routes along the Elbe
Accommodation in Dresden
Dresden combines major architectural landmarks and collections with an urban cycle route along the banks of the Elbe. When looking for a hotel, you might consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on historic architecture, museums, cycling or the winter Striezelmarkt. Pillnitz Palace and Park also offer a distinctive experience.
Architecture and collections
The Dresden Zwinger was built between 1710 and 1728 to plans by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. This complete work of art brings together architecture, sculpture and painting. The Old Masters Picture Gallery is located in the Zwinger. This brings architectural history and an important art collection together in one place.
Dresden Residenzschloss is a Renaissance building in Dresden’s Old Town and houses the museum complex of the Dresden State Art Collections. One of its museums is the Historic Green Vault, which displays around 3,000 precious objects without display cases. The exhibition in Augustus the Strong’s treasure chamber spans eight rooms, including the Amber Cabinet and the Ivory Room. Visits are limited for conservation reasons; advance purchase of timed tickets is recommended. Check the ticket conditions before your trip.
The Frauenkirche is an outstanding example of Baroque architecture. Its distinctive dome defines the city skyline, while the church is also considered a symbol of peace and reconciliation. Guided climbs to the dome are available for groups. Check the official visitor calendar before your trip.
The Albertinum brings together the Galerie Neue Meister and the Sculpture Collection from 1800 onward, both part of the Dresden State Art Collections. Those interested in music will find another cultural experience at the Semperoper, which presents opera, ballet and concerts. Its current form opened in 1878.
Exhibitions, transport and city history
The Dresden Transport Museum features exhibitions about trains, cars, aircraft, ships and urban transport. Visitors can try things out and learn at numerous interactive stations. The topics range from individual modes of transport to transport in the city.
Another way to experience Dresden’s history is Festung Xperience in the casemates of the old fortress. 360-degree projections and 3D sound take visitors through 450 years of Dresden’s eventful history. This format focuses on audiovisual storytelling, while the museums and historic buildings highlight different collections and architectural periods.
Along the Elbe and in Pillnitz
The Elbe Cycle Route is Dresden’s main urban cycle route. It runs along the river through the city, away from road traffic. The Brühl’s Terrace is another distinct Elbe-side attraction: it stretches for about 500 metres between Augustus Bridge and Carola Bridge. Along the river, you can use the Elbe Cycle Route as your guide: Dresden’s main urban cycle route runs along the riverbank through the city, away from road traffic; Brühl’s Terrace stretches for about 500 metres between Augustus Bridge and Carola Bridge.
Pillnitz Palace combines Baroque and Far Eastern architecture and is set among the vineyards of the Elbe Valley. The palace and park invite you to stroll and linger in every season. The Palm House in the palace gardens contains numerous exotic plants from almost every continent. The palace complex is easily accessible by public transport, bicycle, steamboat or car.
Winter Striezelmarkt
The Striezelmarkt is an annual winter Christmas market. Founded in 1434, it is considered the oldest Christmas market in Germany. Visitors can enjoy Dresden Christstollen and see how the famous Dresden Christmas pastry is made in the demonstration bakery. This seasonal highlight is quite different from the year-round opportunities for walks at Pillnitz Palace and Park.
