Discover Grüna: History, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Grüna
North of Grüna, the Rabensteiner Forest offers numerous opportunities for recreation. Grüna’s cultural themes range from the history of textile crafts to the history of airships. When planning your visit, you may also want to consider the different lengths of the named hiking trails, as well as cultural offerings and event dates.
Local History and Buildings
From the 18th century onwards, Grüna developed into a centre of textile crafts through its hosiery and glove knitting. Kreuzkirche church is a defining feature of the townscape; it was inaugurated in 1894. The Folklorehof ensemble in Grüna dates back to 1686. The local history also includes the naturopathic clinic opened in Grüna by Bertrand Stahringer in 1893. Its building still stands.
A gravestone in the Chemnitz-Grüna cemetery commemorates four citizens of the former Soviet Union who were buried there. Their names are inscribed in gold lettering on polished black granite. Taken together, the historical themes span the development of crafts, architectural history and remembrance.
Hiking Trails and Views
The Baumgarten circular trail is 17 kilometres long; a shortcut reduces the distance to 8 kilometres. Its nine stations provide information about Georg Baumgarten and Dr Friedrich Hermann Wölfert, two 19th-century German airship pioneers, as well as the history of the region. Another route option is the “Experience Grüna” Cultural Capital hiking trail, which is about 9 kilometres long.
When comparing the trails by length, the options are an 8-kilometre shortcut, about 9 kilometres for “Experience Grüna” and 17 kilometres for the Baumgarten circular trail. They also differ in content: the Baumgarten circular trail connects the airship pioneers with regional history at its stations, while “Experience Grüna” is described as a hiking trail with an approximate total length.
In clear weather, Maria-Josefa Tower offers views as far as the ridge heights of the Ore Mountains and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. If you plan to visit the tower, check access in advance.
Cultural Offerings and Events
The Baumgarten-Wölfert memorial exhibition is located in Grüna Town Hall, Chemnitzer Str. 109, 09224 Chemnitz/OT Grüna. It provides information about airship history and features information, pictures and videos about Grüna’s history. This gives visitors another way to explore a subject from the Baumgarten circular trail—the airship pioneers. Check the current opening hours before visiting.
The carving association based in Grüna preserves traditional folk woodcarving and shares this tradition with the public. If you are interested in a particular demonstration, ask about the current programme. The Schnitzerhäusl also houses a public library that can be used free of charge; check the opening hours before your visit.
Various ski-jumping events are held at the Gußgrundschanze. Events and dates may vary, so it is worth checking the schedule for your travel dates.
Getting Here and Finding a Hotel
In addition to rail services, Grüna is connected to the city of Chemnitz’s local public transport network and to regional bus routes. Check connections for your travel dates for both arrival and departure. This allows you to coordinate visit times, events and travel with your own plans.
