Salzmünde combines a long local history with landscapes and routes along the Saale and through the Salzatal. If you are looking for a hotel in Salzmünde, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on historical traces, hiking and cycling tours, or activities on the Saale.

History Across Several Eras

At the Salzmünde archaeological site, people associated with the Salzmünde culture, named after the town, performed ritual activities at the end of the fourth millennium BC. This is an early historical layer alongside the town’s medieval significance: Salzmünde was first mentioned in a document in 979 and played an important role as a trading center on the Saale.

Another trace of the past is a castle complex. Its remains are still visible in the terrain on a spur at the western edge of the Saale Valley. The complex was first mentioned in 1288 and has been abandoned since 1442. By contrast, many of the half-timbered houses that still shape the townscape today date from the early 19th century. Prehistoric rituals, the medieval trading center, and the half-timbered houses thus belong to distinctly different eras.

The Salzatal and Its Landscapes

The Salzatal Landscape Protection Area (LSG Salzatal) covers the Salzatal between Salzmünde and Höhnstedt. Between Höhnstedt and Köllme, the valley cuts into the soft Bunter sandstone of the Mansfelder Mulde. In this section, steep-sided slopes alternate with gentler slopes and narrow to wider valley floors. The hiking area between Salzmünde and Friedeburg includes, among other things, the particularly valuable Saale Valley slope between Pfützthal and Rumpin.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

Salzmünde’s location between the Saale Valley and the surrounding hills and slopes makes it a starting point for long hikes and cycling tours. Two different directions are specified for cycling: the Naturpark-Radwanderweg R 1 runs via Salzmünde and Pfützthal toward Friedeburg. The Radrundroute R 2.1 reaches Salzmünde via the Saaleradweg and the Naturpark-Radwanderweg, then continues through the Salzatal via Zappendorf and Köllme toward Dölauer Heide.

This comparison helps with a general choice of direction: Friedeburg is the stated direction of the R 1; the R 2.1 focuses on continuing through the Salzatal toward Dölauer Heide. On foot, the hiking area between Salzmünde and Friedeburg includes, among other things, the Saale Valley slope between Pfützthal and Rumpin. This lets you distinguish the cycling and hiking options by the places they connect.
