When planning a trip to Wickerode, you can focus on a range of interests: hiking, leisure activities in the Nasse Valley, or the history of St. Trinitatis Church. If you are looking for a hotel, deciding what you want to focus on can help you organize your travel plans.

Hiking and finding your way

Wickerode can serve as a starting point for hikes in the South Harz Karst Landscape Biosphere Reserve. There is also a well-signposted local network of hiking trails. When planning, you can decide whether you want to stick mainly to the local trails or head into the karst landscape. Signage and trail conditions can change, so check the route markers before setting out.

The Karst Hiking Trail is a 265-kilometer route through Mansfeld-Südharz, Nordhausen and the former district of Osterode. It is marked with a white K on a red bar against a white background. The local trails and the Karst Hiking Trail differ in scale: the 265 kilometers of the Karst Hiking Trail contrast with a well-signposted local network. The route also provides information about geology, landscape, nature conservation and groundwater, as well as settlement and industrial history. This connects route-finding with topics you can explore along the way. Check the trail markers and conditions before setting out.

Leisure activities in the Nasse Valley

Wickerode’s recreation center is located in the Nasse Valley. It has facilities for sports, games, resting and barbecuing, as well as a playground; there is also a charcoal burner’s hut. The center offers a different focus from the hiking trails: several leisure activities are available at one named location. When planning your trip, you can consider whether to focus your stay mainly on hiking or also include these leisure activities. Check on site which facilities are available and what opening rules apply.

St. Trinitatis and its architectural history

St. Trinitatis Church dates from 1745 and was restored in 1992–1994. The present building incorporates masonry from an earlier church and largely preserves the Baroque character of the 1745 structure. On a visit, you can therefore focus on two aspects: the older building fabric and the largely preserved Baroque features. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; confirm the date before you arrive. The open church garden offers a quiet place for reflection.

Landscape and local character

Agriculture and fruit growing shape the surroundings of Wickerode. Alongside the hiking trails and the church’s history, the use of the landscape is also part of the village’s character. These different topics offer different perspectives: the Karst Hiking Trail focuses, among other things, on geology and nature conservation, while agriculture and fruit growing shape Wickerode’s surroundings. Together with the history of St. Trinitatis, they make it possible to plan a trip that takes in both the landscape and local history.
