Mining history and local history are at the heart of many of Helbra’s attractions. A marked local heritage and mining trail, the Copper Experience World, and a cycling route to Siebigerode offer different starting points for planning your trip. The churches and the history of the Schmid Shaft are also among the town’s points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Helbra, you could first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on the industrial past, local history, or a bike ride.

Mining History and Churches

The marked and interpretive local heritage and mining trail covers several attractions: the Malakow Tower, the fully preserved Schmid Shaft, the Evangelical St. Stephen’s Church with its 1,000-year-old tower, and the Catholic St. Barbara’s Church. The trail thus highlights both mining heritage and churches. The two churches bring different religious points of reference into the town’s history; St. Stephen’s tower is particularly notable for its age.

The Schmid Shaft is named after Carl Friedrich Schmid, who was involved in the Mansfeld copper-smelting industry. The shaft was sunk from 1844 to 1846, reaching a depth of 184 metres. It is the only fully preserved above-ground mining complex in the Mansfeld Basin. The headframe has undergone extensive restoration. Its construction period, depth, and preserved structures give the Schmid Shaft a clearly defined historical perspective on mining in Helbra.

Copper Experience World: History and Technology

The first section of the Copper Experience World is devoted to the former August Bebel copper works. At the second location, an exhibition offers detailed insights into Helbra’s history. There, the rock garden explores the geology of the Mansfeld region and also explains the working lives of miners. The two locations therefore have different focuses: one is dedicated to the former copper works, while the other covers Helbra’s history, regional geology, and underground work.

The Schmid Shaft visit includes three original winding engines and a copper smelting furnace that visitors can walk through. The Copper Experience World is accessible exclusively as part of a guided tour. Tours can be arranged by telephone, email, or through the website’s contact form. Arrange your visit using one of these options if you would like to explore the facilities inside.

The Energy Experience Trail offers another technical perspective. It is a municipal visitor education project. The Schmid Shaft is one of its stops, covering the use of energy in mining and copper smelting in the Mansfeld region. The stop also provides information about mining and smelting technology. It thus complements the shaft’s history with questions of energy and technical work.

Cycling Route and the Region’s Mining History

The Helbra–Siebigerode cycling route is 2,716.30 metres long. It starts at the rebuilt railway crossing at Gartenheim in Helbra and ends in Siebigerode. With these two endpoints and its precisely stated length, the route can be incorporated into bike trip planning. A 18-metre-high observation platform also offers views across the Mansfeld region.

The former Mansfeld Mining Railway is also part of the region’s industrial history: until 1990, it transported intermediate products within and between the smelters in Helbra and Hettstedt. This historical role places Helbra’s mining history in the wider context of the smelting industry. It should be distinguished from today’s cycling route: the railway is described here in terms of freight transport up to 1990.

Mansfeld-SĂĽdharz as a Wider Cultural Region

In the wider destination of Mansfeld-Südharz, the Luther Trail runs for around 81 kilometres and passes through places associated with the Reformation. In Eisleben, the houses where Martin Luther was born and died are among the Luther sites. These regional examples broaden the perspective beyond Helbra’s focus on mining and local history.
