Gommern lies between the Elbe floodplains and the foothills of the Fläming. Cycling, lake landscapes and historic sites offer different ways to spend your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Gommern, you can decide whether to focus mainly on longer bike rides, walks by the water, or architectural and cultural history as you plan your trip.

Cycling around Gommern

A 218-kilometre network of cycling routes to attractions is signposted around Gommern. Bridge, church and castle tours can be taken independently or with a guide. These tours are about 25 to 35 kilometres long and take five hours. Before setting off, check whether a guided tour is available and whether the signposting is in good condition. The information on distance and duration provides a guide for planning your time, but no further distances or times can be inferred from it.

The R2 offers a different route option: in Dornburg, it runs directly through the Elbe floodplain meadows. Gommern is also close to the Elbe Cycle Route. These two cycling routes offer different points of reference: the R2 runs through the meadows in Dornburg, while the Elbe Cycle Route provides a regional point of reference. The town’s location on the Romanesque Route, as well as its pine and mixed forests, are also part of the landscape around Gommern.

Lakes, wetlands and green trails

Fuchsberg is a large protected migrating dune. Right beside it is the Kulk, a flooded former quarry with a sandy shore, observation tower, paved paths, rock garden, playground and pedestrian bridge. This site brings together a protected dune landscape and landscaped areas by the water.

A recreational area around almost 30 gravel pits turned into lakes includes outdoor swimming pools, campsites, bungalow settlements, restaurants and amenities. Dense pine and birch forests invite visitors to swim and hike at five of the lakes. Check swimming conditions and the availability of individual facilities before your trip. In town, wetlands provide natural habitats for water-loving plants and small animals. The Pfarrgarten wetland has a water surface of 350 square metres, a shallow-water shoreline and an adjoining perennial garden. Find out about current access conditions before visiting.

The Dannigkow recreational area also focuses on outdoor activities and scenery: the Elbe meadows and extensive forests invite visitors to hike and cycle. The Plattensee campsite has a swimming lake and is located beside the Middle Elbe Landscape Conservation Area, the Romanesque Route and the Elbe Cycle Route R2. Check the current conditions for visiting and using the facilities in advance.

Moated castle and historic buildings

Gommern’s moated castle combines a historic castle complex with a restaurant, an on-site brewery and a hotel. The complex also offers a redesigned courtyard, medieval-style banquets and castle festivals; there is also a wedding room. The moated castle is therefore a clear destination for travellers who want to combine their stay with a historic site. Check directly in advance whether a particular offering will be available when you visit.

The Church of St. Stephen stands in Vehlitz, within the municipal area of Gommern. It is late Romanesque and dates from around 1150. Inside is a late Gothic three-winged carved altar. Dornburg Castle tells a different architectural story: it was built from 1751 to 1758 as a widow’s residence for Princess Johanna Elisabeth. The comparison highlights two different historical points of reference—a village church with a medieval altar and an 18th-century castle.

The origins of the site of Leitzkau Castle Church lie in a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1138/39. This refers to the monastery, not to the construction date of the present-day castle church. It adds a much earlier historical context to the history of churches and castles in the surrounding area.

Exploring the Jerichower Land district

In the broader destination of Jerichower Land, the district can be explored from north to south along the Elbe Cycle Route. Jerichow Monastery is another regional point of interest: it is considered the oldest brick building in northern Germany and a landmark of Jerichower Land. The monastery garden was laid out based on historical models, and visitors can learn about the monastery’s history in the monastery museum. These regional attractions complement Gommern but are not features of the town itself.

The Gommern Tourist Information Centre offers leisure tips, brochures and leaflets about Gommern and the surrounding municipalities. If you want to narrow down your choice of excursions and bike rides, it is one possible place to get help planning your trip. Check the availability of this visitor service before your trip.
