Schielo is located in the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park and the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz. Braunschweiger Land. Ostfalen. Nature and hiking provide a clear thematic focus for the village. There is also a hike connected to the photographic artist Karl Blossfeldt, the Eichberg Nature Discovery Trail, and a wintertime use of the village pond that depends on suitable conditions. When planning your trip, you can take these different highlights and the time of year into account.

Hiking and Nature in Schielo

The photographic artist Karl Blossfeldt (1865–1932) was born in Schielo. The “Hike 6” route draws on his biography: it leads from Schielo to Wilhelmshof and through the Wernrod area, following in Blossfeldt’s footsteps. This describes both the route’s starting point and the other places it passes through.

The Eichberg Nature Discovery Trail in Schielo also invites visitors to explore nature. The two walking routes have different focuses: Hike 6 foregrounds the connection to Blossfeldt and the route described, while the Eichberg trail offers a more general opportunity to explore nature. When planning, you can therefore decide whether you would like to focus your stay particularly on the connection to the photographer or on the experience of nature.

A Wintertime Option at the Village Pond

When winter conditions are suitable, the village pond in Schielo is used for ice skating. Skating is therefore dependent on actual winter conditions and is not a guaranteed activity for every date. If this matters for your trip planning, bear this seasonal caveat in mind.

The hike following in Blossfeldt’s footsteps, the nature trail, and ice skating at the village pond offer different ways to enjoy a stay. While the route describes a named trail through several places, use of the pond is explicitly dependent on suitable winter conditions. When looking for a hotel in Schielo, you can first decide which of these interests and which travel dates matter most to you.

More to Explore in the Wider Harzgerode Destination

The wider Harzgerode destination adds a historical highlight: the castle. Harzgerode Castle was rebuilt between 1549 and 1552 and served from 1635 to 1709 as the residence of the Harzgerode branch of the Anhalt princely house. The Renaissance building has a stair tower and a round tower. St. Mary’s Church in Harzgerode is also one of the town’s historic buildings; it is a Baroque structure dating from 1697 to 1699. The Köthen Hut was built in 1897 as a shelter on Kapellenfelsen by the Köthen branch of the Harz Club.

Those interested in nature activities in the wider Harzgerode destination will find the Harzgerode Nature Trail, with a quiz, barefoot path, and sound organ. The HARZKUGELEUM at Harzgerode Castle offers a different way to share information: a beechwood ball travels through various themed worlds together with visitors. Its shape and weight convey information about the Lower Harz, mining, nature, and local and regional history through the ages. Opening hours vary by season; check them before visiting.

There is also a described alternative for a winter outing in the wider Harzgerode destination: the natural toboggan run descends from the Harzgerode plateau in several curves over 1,100 metres into the Selke Valley, ending at the promenade in Alexisbad, and covers a difference in elevation of around 75 metres. If there is too little snow, the route is also suitable for a winter hike. This differs from the use of Schielo’s village pond, which is described as an ice-skating area when winter conditions are suitable.

The Harzgerode Advent Trails return every year on the second Sunday of Advent as a pre-Christmas experience for the whole family; the date and program vary. Travel to Harzgerode by train via Quedlinburg is also described: after taking the train to Quedlinburg, you can reach Harzgerode on the Selke Valley Railway. Check the timetable before travelling. This information adds to the picture of Harzgerode as a wider destination, while Schielo’s own highlights are nature, hiking, and ice skating at the village pond when conditions permit.
