When looking for a hotel in Lanitz-Hassel-Tal, it helps to have a clear idea of which themes you want your trip to focus on. The churches in Poppel, Spielberg and Taugwitz differ in their construction periods and features; the landscape ranges from woodland to shell-limestone slopes. Wine tastings and seminars offer another focus. Which interests matter to you depends on whether your trip is shaped by architectural history, nature or wine.

Churches with Different Phases of Construction

The small Romanesque fieldstone Church of St. Barbara in Poppel has a nave that was most recently rebuilt in 1734. Its Baroque interior features a wooden mirrored ceiling, galleries, a pulpit altar and a baptismal angel. Remnants of late Gothic murals depict Saints Barbara and Dorothea. The organ and bell also have their own historical connections: Wilhelm Heerwagen built the organ in 1864, and a bronze bell dating from 1650 hangs in the tower.

The church in Taugwitz was built in 1899 in the Neo-Romanesque style on the site of a chapel thought to date from the 12th century. The Church of St. Martin in Spielberg is dedicated to Saint Martin and is considered one of the oldest parish and baptismal churches in the area. The Via Regia once also ran south of Poppel; it was an important east-west trade route. Together, these details offer different historical points of reference: construction phases and architectural features sit alongside the history of a trade route.

Landscape of Woodland, Slopes and Dry Grassland

The protected area includes the Schenkenholz woodland on the plateau east of Niedermöllern. The Göttersitz landscape includes steep shell-limestone slopes, dry and semi-dry grassland, rock formations and near-natural deciduous forests. Thus, wooded plateau areas sit alongside open grassland and striking slopes. If you are interested in nature and landscapes, this offers a different focus from the churches and their architectural history.
