You can get to know Großjena through a range of themes: the Blütengrund, shaped by vineyards, outdoor trails, and cultural and historical sites associated with Max Klinger and St. Ruperti. Which of these you put at the heart of your visit gives your trip planning a clear direction.

Vineyard landscape and Blütengrund

The Blütengrund near Großjena is characterized by vineyards with protected terraces and numerous dry-stone walls. It also features slopes with a favorable microclimate and orchards. Together, these landscape features define the character of the area. The Blütengrund is located in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park.

A network of hiking and cycling trails is another way to explore the landscape. Farm tracks through meadows, fields and small woods in Großjena invite you to discover nature and its rare fauna and flora.

Trails on foot and by bike

The Saale Wine Experience Trail is a 25-kilometer circular route that passes through Großjena and can be ridden by bike along its entire length. Unlike this route, the Weinbergweg, which runs along the vineyard heights, is exclusively for hikers. The two trails therefore differ not only in their routes, but also in the means of transport for which they are intended.

The Saale-Unstrut Wine Route, which passes directly through Großjena, offers another route connection. The circular trail, the Weinbergweg and the wine route are therefore different starting points for planning a trip. If you are interested in hiking or cycling, you can use the features of each route as a guide without treating the different routes as one and the same.

Max Klinger and historic sites

The Max Klinger House in Großjena presents a permanent exhibition on the artist’s life and work. The house also contains two large tiled stoves designed and shaped by Max Klinger himself. The exhibition provides a biographical overview; the stoves are a concrete example of his own design work.

Klinger’s history in Großjena is also connected with winegrowing: in 1903, he acquired a vineyard there with two vineyard houses. The Stone Album is located in the vicinity of Großjena. It comprises twelve reliefs, taller than a person, carved into a sandstone terrace wall in the middle of a vineyard. The reliefs and their setting bring together artistic motifs and a cultural landscape shaped by vineyards.

St. Ruperti Church in Großjena is mentioned as early as the 15th century. Inside is a pulpit altar dating from 1723. The church and altar thus represent different historical points of reference: the early mention of the church and a precisely dated piece of its furnishings. Max Klinger’s grave is also a place of remembrance in its own right. It is adorned with a bronze sculpture that Klinger modeled himself; a staircase flanked by two marble herm figures leads to the grave.

Park and Wine Blossom Festival

The park at Großjena Manor features mature trees and is suitable for a stroll. The owner organizes exhibitions in the manor house. Together, these offer time outdoors and a cultural element, without presuming any particular exhibition program.

The Wine Blossom Festival is an annual event in the village, celebrated on the second weekend in June. The festival includes the crowning of the Wine Blossom Princess. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current event dates when making your arrangements.

Ferry and route planning

At the confluence of the Saale and Unstrut rivers, visitors can take a ferry to the opposite bank of the Saale. The ferry operates seasonally; check operating details before your trip. When the ferry is not running, the Blütengrund can be reached via the Großjena–Roßbach cycle route. Current route information may be useful when planning this connection.
