Culture and landscape in the wider Burgenlandkreis destination
Naumburg Cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1 July 2018. It is considered one of the most significant cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages; its architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures are described as unique worldwide. Neuenburg Castle in Freyburg was founded around 1090 by the Thuringian Count Ludwig the Springer and is a prominent stop on the Romanesque Road.
Archaeological topics also have a place of their own in the wider Burgenlandkreis destination. The Goseck circular ditch enclosure is considered the earliest archaeological evidence of systematic observations of the sky. The monument, around 75 metres across, was fully excavated and precisely reconstructed at its original location. Goseck Castle houses an information centre about the solar observatory; its exhibits illustrate the excavations at Goseck and the phenomenon of circular ditch enclosures.
The Arche Nebra is a modern visitor centre at the discovery site of the Nebra Sky Disc. It offers guided tours, hands-on activities and special exhibitions. The digital planetarium features a 22-minute show about Bronze Age astronomical knowledge. The Himmelswege (Sky Paths) run through Burgenlandkreis and point the way to archaeological and astronomy-history highlights associated with the Nebra Sky Disc and the Goseck solar observatory. This gives the region a range of different experiences: the reconstructed monument at Goseck, and the exhibitions and planetarium show at Arche Nebra.
Terraced vineyards shape the landscape of Burgenlandkreis. The Wine Route is considered one of the county’s most important tourist routes. Access to Mittelberg is free; visitors can reach it on foot, by bicycle, e-scooter or an authorised scheduled bus. Access by private motor vehicle is not permitted. As access rules may change, check the current regulations before your visit.
The valley, nature park, edge of the wine-growing region, rail and bus connections, and church describe Balgstädt; the cultural and visitor sites mentioned complement the wider regional context.
