Wanzleben-Börde: Castle, Romanesque Architecture and Local History
Accommodation in Wanzleben-Börde
Wanzleben-Börde brings together a range of travel interests: the castle and churches are at the heart of its history, while the leisure pool adds recreational activities. The area is also linked to the Romanesque Road and the Way of St. James. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help guide your choice: decide whether architectural history, churches or swimming facilities should be the focus of your stay.
Wanzleben Castle and Romanesque Architecture
Wanzleben Castle is considered one of Europe’s largest lowland castles. The complex was built as a circular castle with double moats and ramparts. Its Romanesque keep dates from the 13th century and is 30 metres high. The castle is also a stop on the Romanesque Road. Guided tours are available by arrangement, so please arrange your visit in advance. The complex’s circular layout and fortifications provide further specific details about its architectural history, complementing the date and height of the keep.
Churches and Townscape
St. Jacobi Church in Wanzleben is a three-aisled hall church with a Romanesque core and Late Gothic additions. This juxtaposition of Romanesque and Late Gothic styles makes the different architectural elements within a single church a point of interest. Other attractions in Wanzleben include remnants of the town wall and a park. The town hall has two storeys, and the market in front of it has a distinctive trumpet-like shape. The town hall and market complement the focus on churches and the castle with a striking public square.
In Seehausen, St. Paul’s Church is considered the oldest church in the Magdeburg Börde; it is also on the Romanesque Road. You can book guided tours by arrangement with the Protestant parish. Wanzleben is also a stop on the Way of St. James from the Elbe to the Rhine. Alongside the architectural history of individual churches, you will therefore find two different connections to historic routes.
Leisure at the Leisure Pool
The leisure pool in the village of Wanzleben has a 45-metre slide, a current channel and a mushroom fountain. Check the leisure pool’s current opening status before your arrival. Large sunbathing lawns and a food and drink outlet complement the water attractions. As facilities may change over time, please check in advance whether the food and drink outlet will be available during your visit. The pool’s features include both pools and slides as well as outdoor areas.
Börde: Landscape and Culture in a Wider Context
The broader Börde travel destination encompasses landscapes with a variety of characteristics. The Börde district stretches from the fertile Börde region in the south to the meadows and wetlands of the Drömling in the north. Germany’s largest contiguous area of black earth lies in the south. Wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlingen Heath characterize the centre of the district; the heath is home to Europe’s largest contiguous linden forest. This range of landscapes—from southern black earth to northern wetlands and wooded ridges—describes the wider setting, not the features of the village of Wanzleben.
The cultural attractions of the wider Börde travel destination also extend beyond the sights in Wanzleben. The Romanesque Road includes ten different sites in the Börde district. Hundisburg Castle is one of the most significant rural Baroque palaces in Saxony-Anhalt; its historic gardens and parkland include a Baroque garden with striking symmetry and detailed horticultural design.
The Hundisburg Brickworks Industrial Monument offers a different focus, with its brickworks and technology museum. Its features include brick production using the hand-striking method, a coarse ceramics workshop for moulding and pottery, a building materials workshop and a carpentry shop. The historic field railway offers a visitor ride of about two kilometres, passing historic kilns, a bucket-chain excavator and the former clay pit. Thus, in the broader Börde travel destination, technology and industrial history are also available as distinct themes alongside churches and castles.
