Castle history and landscapes in Kunrau

Kunrau combines a visit to a historic castle with the Drömling landscape and activities for nature lovers. If you are looking for a hotel in Kunrau, you can plan your stay around three main attractions: the castle, trails through the Drömling, or the Kreativhof’s scheduled activities. Be sure to arrange tours and individual creative activities in advance; the landscape can be explored via both an educational trail and tours with different routes.

Kunrau Castle and its history

Kunrau Castle was built between 1859 and 1861 for Theodor Hermann Rimpau. The historic castle park is a pleasant place to linger. Tours of Kunrau Castle include climbing the tower and visiting the exhibition in the attic. If you would like to include these activities in your plans, ask about a tour in advance. This lets you make the castle visit a distinct historical focus of your stay.

A memorial stone was erected in the Belfort colony. Theodor Rimpau, owner of the Kunrau estate, provides another historical connection to the landscape: in 1862, he began building peatland dams. The history of the castle and the construction of the peatland dams offer different perspectives on Kunrau and its surroundings.

The Drömling and its trails

The Drömling is a vast wetland and fen area featuring meadows, hedgerows, forests, and marshes and bodies of water. It also has an extensive network of waterways. Kunrau is directly connected to this landscape; the office of the Drömling Nature and Cultural Landscape of Saxony-Anhalt is located in Kunrau. Moorland, forest, and water areas thus offer a distinct focus alongside the historic castle.

An educational trail leads from Kunrau into the northern Drömling and provides access to the area. The Klötze Moor and Forest Tour in the Drömling is about 60 kilometres long and continues to Kunrau, to the castle or manor house. The Altmark Circular Route from Klötze to the Hanseatic town of Salzwedel passes Kunrau Castle. The trails differ in their connections to the area: the educational trail starts in Kunrau, while the two tours include Kunrau or the castle as a point along the route. The approximate length of the Klötze Moor and Forest Tour is a useful guide when comparing its distance with your travel plans.

Creative activities and practical planning

The Kreativhof Kunrau mainly offers creative courses on nature-related topics. Its activities also include tastings of the farm’s beer and outdoor cooking in the “wild kitchen.” If you would like to take part in a course, tasting, or cooking activity, confirm the specific dates directly with the Kreativhof before your visit. That way, you can plan your travel dates around a suitable event.

Kunrau outdoor swimming pool has been closed since 2021. Before visiting, check on the status of any possible development plans. The Nature Experience Centre and Öko-Schule Kunrau ceased operations on 31 July 2024. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth taking these details into account, along with the dates of any tour or creative activity you would like to attend.
