Püttlingen can be explored through its historic buildings, cultural venues and trails with a range of themes. The sites tell stories of medieval rule in the Köllertal, art and literature from the region, and the development of timekeeping. When choosing a destination, it is therefore worth considering in advance whether architectural history, exhibitions, a museum or walks should be your main focus. The different stops offer a variety of ways to explore these interests.

Castle, Hunting Lodge and Prison Tower

The Counts of Saarbrücken built Burg Bucherbach to secure their rule in the central Köllertal and administer their holdings there. The castle therefore served both a defensive and an administrative purpose. Following extensive restoration work in 1982/84 and 2011, it became an event venue in the centre of Köllerbach, hosting festivals and other events. The site brings together the castle’s history and its later cultural use.

Together with Hexenturm, marked castle remains and the town hall, Püttlinger Schlösschen forms part of the architectural setting of the central town park. The late-Baroque hunting lodge was built around 1790 on the site of the old Püttlingen Castle. Hexenturm, by contrast, is a later prison tower that stood outside the medieval castle precinct. The buildings thus reflect different periods, and the tower was not part of the medieval castle complex.

The underground dungeon of Hexenturm is associated with the imprisonment and execution of 14 women accused of witchcraft around 1580 to 1600. This history gives the tower a different significance from the late-Baroque Püttlinger Schlösschen and the marked castle remains in the park.

Cultural Venues and Layers of History

The historic Püttlingen railway station ensemble was restored in accordance with heritage conservation standards and converted into a cultural centre. The exhibitions change regularly and showcase artists from the Köllertal. Following its restoration, the goods shed reopened in 2004 as an arts and cultural hall. The two buildings offer contrasting perspectives: the former station ensemble with its cultural function, and a hall that reopened as a venue for art and culture.

The Saarland Clock Museum focuses on the development of timekeeping. Its presentation spans from antiquity to the present day, covering a different timeframe from the architectural history of the castle or the hunting lodge. St. Martin in Köllerbach is one of the oldest religious buildings in Saarland. The Heilig Kreuz Monastery was built near the Kreuzkapelle between 1956 and 1960 and is considered Germany’s only Redemptorist convent.

Literature, Activity and Puzzles

The Literature Trail combines literature with outdoor activity and invites visitors to explore Püttlingen and Köllerbach. At locations in both places, texts by four authors are displayed behind glass panels. This way, you encounter literary works along the route rather than at just one cultural venue.

The Denkspur trail has a different focus: this walking route combines physical activity with cognitive tasks at various stops. A free app supplements the route; check whether it is currently available before your visit. The main difference between the two experiences is what you encounter along the way: the Literature Trail focuses on texts, while Denkspur features tasks at its stops.

Views as Far as Lorraine

The spoil heap of the former Viktoria mine offers expansive views across the region and into neighbouring Lorraine. This landscape perspective complements the cultural and historic sites and themed trails. If you are considering Püttlingen as a destination, you can tailor your stay to a particular interest—for example, the history of the castle, changing exhibitions, literary texts along the way or views across the region.
