Discover Marpingen: trails, forests and culture
Accommodation in Marpingen
If you are planning a stay in Marpingen, you can choose between landscapes and trails or individual cultural destinations. The route details help distinguish a circular walk from a longer cycling route; historic buildings, a museum and a place of prayer offer different points of interest. The right combination depends on whether you want to focus on exercise, observing nature or architectural history.
Woodland scenery and observing nature
Around 800 hectares of forest surround Marpingen. The landscape is characterised by gentle hills, meadow valleys, and varied forests and fields. Woodland and open countryside therefore offer contrasting landscapes. During your stay, this landscape can provide an alternative to a fixed cultural route: you can choose a trail with named stops or focus on a particular destination in the countryside.
In Berschweiler, BiberBurg and the adjacent Beaver Trail offer nature-based experiences. The Beaver Trail offers opportunities to observe native animals and plants. Here, the focus is on observing nature, while the Marian circular trail is characterised by several named stops.
Härtelwald: place of prayer and spring
The Marian shrine in Härtelwald comprises a chapel and a spring. The chapel and spring are places for prayer and contemplation; other possible activities there include devotional services, prayer gatherings and reflective concerts. The Church officially recognised the site as a place of prayer in 2005.
The Marian Spring is located in the upper part of the forest, has filling stations and is accessible all year round, at any time of day. For the main access by car and bus, signs from the centre of Marpingen direct visitors to the car park on Kettelerstraße. The access route to the chapel for visitors with limited mobility leads from the town centre via Marktplatz, Alte Klosterstraße, Härtelhohl and Kapellenweg to a small car park. When planning your journey, keep these two car park details separate: the main access leads to the car park on Kettelerstraße, while the route to the chapel leads to the small car park on Kapellenweg.
Two routes of different lengths
The Marian circular trail is a good option if you are planning a hike with named stops along the way. The moderately difficult circular hike is 10.5 kilometres long, takes around four hours and starts and ends at the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Marpingen. Its stops include Härtelwald, the Peace Cross, St John’s Chapel, Hiwwelhaus and Marian Fountain. Combining several destinations makes this a route where planning the order of the stops is just as important as allowing for the walking time.
The Schaumberg Cycle Route is another option: this moderately difficult route covers 40 kilometres and starts and ends at the market square in Tholey. It reaches Marpingen via the former Roman road Rheinstraße and suggests a detour to the Marian shrine. The comparison is specific: the Marian circular trail has an estimated walking time and several stops, while the Schaumberg Cycle Route specifies the distance and start and end points. This lets you compare the routes by mode of travel and length, rather than treating their time details as equivalent.
Hiwwelhaus and cultural centre
Hiwwelhaus was built in 1712. Its distinctive features offer insight into Saarland’s farmhouse culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Near the village church in Alsweiler, it is considered the oldest farmhouse in Saarland to have been preserved in its original condition. Part of the house is open to the public as a museum. The former agricultural wing can host cultural events and seminars. Its historic architecture and potential use as an event venue are therefore two different aspects to consider.
The Alte Mühle cultural centre in Marpingen has an entrance with reduced accessibility barriers and an accessible toilet. If these aspects matter to your travel planning, both are practical points of reference when visiting the cultural centre.
