Rehlingen-Siersburg stretches from the Saar across the Nied valley and the Gau to the French border. Its landscapes, trails and historic buildings offer a range of options for your stay. You can focus on hikes, cycling tours or cultural sites, depending on whether you prefer to explore on foot, ride a bike or visit individual buildings.

Landscapes Between the Saar and Nied

The hiking area around the Nied and Saar includes valley floors, wooded hills and agricultural plateaus. The Nied has good water quality and flows through a largely unspoiled river landscape. Open spaces, wooded heights and the river valley are among the different landscapes to consider when planning excursions.

Hiking and Cycling

The hiking trails vary in length and character. The Druidenpfad in Niedaltdorf is an approximately 6 km-long premium hiking trail, designed to be family-friendly, that leads to a reconstructed Celtic farmstead and a Celtic burial mound. At around 18 km, the Idesbachpfad in Itzbach is considerably longer and includes sections that challenge experienced hikers. These two trails therefore differ clearly in length and difficulty if you are looking for a shorter, family-friendly route. Four themed hiking trails are named Panoramaweg, Ammonitweg, Gau-Niedtalweg and Fledermauspfad.

There is also a wide choice of cycling tours: five routes cover more than 140 km of cycling paths in total. Some routes cross the French border. The options include routes for beginners, experienced cyclists, mountain bikers and recreational cyclists. This lets you choose a tour to suit your preferred riding style.

The Nied and Visitor Conditions

The Nied and the wider Nied area offer recreational opportunities; at the same time, the river provides good living conditions for many fish species. Specific restrictions apply to small, non-motorized watercraft: their use on the Nied is prohibited every year from March 15 to June 30. The same prohibition applies when the water level at Niedaltdorf is below 30 cm. Check the regulations and water level before planning a trip.

Buildings and History

Important architectural monuments include St. Willibrord Chapel in Siersdorf, as well as the parish church and castle in Itzbach. Schloss Fremersdorf is a Baroque complex built around an inner courtyard from 1775 onward. The castle near the Saar in Rehlingen is associated with the noble von Hausen family.

At Siersberg Castle, the history of the surviving keep dates back to the 14th century; it is almost 14 m tall. From the tower, visitors can look out over the Saar and Nied valleys. The hills of Lorraine are also visible to the west. Its height, age and views give the building a character distinct from the municipality’s castles and chapels.

Niedaltdorf Stalactite Cave

During the 2026 season, visits to Niedaltdorf Stalactite Cave are only possible as part of a guided tour. Advance online booking is requested; spontaneous visits are generally not possible. Check the visitor conditions before your arrival.
