If you are considering Holler as a travel destination, you can get to know the area through three specific themes: its nature park landscape, hiking and cycling routes, and local history. Holler lies in Nassau Nature Park at an elevation of around 300 metres above sea level. Forests, meadows, fields, and hills shape the surroundings; walks offer sweeping views across the southern Westerwald. Holler is also one of the places in the Gelbachhöhen area of the Gelbach Valley. The valley connects the southern Westerwald with the Lahn and the regions of Montabaur, Bad Ems-Nassau, and Diez. This makes it possible to consider the landscape around the village separately from the Gelbach Valley’s longer regional connections.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Tour

The GelbACHTrail is certified as a “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany” and runs from Montabaur through the Gelbach Valley to Obernhof on the Lahn. Check route conditions before setting out. For cyclists, the approximately 19-kilometre Montabäurer Acht forms a loop through Holler. It is not signposted; GPX planning is recommended. The two routes offer different approaches to planning: the named endpoints help with orientation on the GelbACHTrail, while the approximate distance and digital planning are important reference points for the Montabäurer Acht.

Local History and Seasonal Impressions

Holler was first documented in 1228. From the late 17th century onward, it was the main settlement of the district of the same name. Another historical landmark is the parish church of St. Margaret in Holler, built between 1756 and 1759. These dates mark different chapters: the first written record of the village, its later role as a main settlement, and a church construction project with a clearly established date.

Holler’s seasonal Christmas market events feature the aromas of mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle, punch, bratwurst, and waffles. The offerings may vary. If the market is important to your trip, check dates and offerings in advance.

Regional Transport Information

Holler is near Montabaur. ICE train services and the A3 motorway towards Cologne and Frankfurt are also important reference points for regional travel. Check train timetables separately if you are planning your trip around them.

Within the Wider Westerwald Destination

If you look beyond Holler to the wider Westerwald destination, you will find other distinct attractions. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance hiking trail with 16 stages. Consult the current route planner when planning your stages. The Stöffel-Park brings together geology and industrial history: the approximately 140-hectare site of a former basalt quarry combines industrial heritage, geological history, and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the “Stöffel Mouse,” which document around 25 million years of Earth’s history.

The Westerwald Ceramic Museum is dedicated to the history of working with clay. The clay used for most of the objects on display originally came from a Westerwald clay pit. At the museum workshop, visitors can get creative themselves under expert guidance; check the programme and booking terms in advance. Hachenburg also offers a historical focus: restored half-timbered houses around the Old Market Square shape the historic town centre, whose character is also defined by the Lion Fountain.
