Alpenrod offers several concrete starting points for planning a trip: the Protestant church, the motte and named routes for Nordic walking and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Alpenrod, you can choose your focus in advance—local history, traces of historic settlements, or one of the tours. When planning, it is worth distinguishing local sights and routes from attractions in the wider Westerwald destination.

Gräbersberg: elevation and tower

Gräbersberg reaches 513.1 metres and is considered the highest elevation in the western Westerwald between the Nister and the Rhine. The observation tower in Alpenrod is 73 metres high; its platform is 33 metres above the ground. At its foot is the Alpenroder Hütte, which offers refreshments. The height figures refer to different points of reference: the elevation, the tower’s total height and the platform’s height above the ground. This makes it easy to distinguish between landscape and structure measurements.

Church and transport history

A chapel in Alpenrod probably already existed in 1131. The Protestant Church of Alpenrod is a 19th-century hall church built in 1843/1844. Remains of the masonry of a medieval predecessor building are preserved in its tower; the former church also provided a collection box dating from 1596. These dates refer to different elements of the church’s history: the probable early chapel, the surviving masonry, the later hall church and a furnishing.

The Alte Poststraße also forms part of the area’s transport history: it was a historic road diversion near Alpenrod, continued to be used for local traffic and is documented in a register from 1689.

Motte and visiting conditions

Traces of the site are visible at Alpenrod Motte; it is considered a motte-and-bailey castle in a lowland setting. Access is free unless the meadow is being farmed. Parking for the motte is available on Mittelstraße. Plan your visit according to how the meadow is being used, and follow local signage when parking.

Nordic walking and cycle routes

The Alpenrod “Maximilians-Runde” Nordic walking tour starts at the car park below Gräbersberg. Hachenburg, Bad Marienberg/Nistertal or Rothenhain can be used as access points for travelling to the route by train; check the timetables before your journey.

The Nister Cycle Route uses forest tracks and passes through Alpenrod, running from the Nister valley to the heights and on to Hachenburg. The Westerwald-Lahn Cycle Route passes through Alpenrod and Lochum on its way to Linden and Dreifelden. The two routes therefore differ in the places they pass through and their stated destinations. Conditions on both cycle routes may change; check the current route before setting off.

The Westerwald as a wider regional destination

In the wider Westerwald destination, the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park offers hiking opportunities among the Westerwald’s gently rolling heights and in the Wied valley. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance hiking trail through the Westerwald, with 16 stages. The information about the nature park describes a scenic hiking setting; the length and number of stages provide details about the long-distance trail.

The Stöffel-Park in the Westerwald offers a different regional focus: the former basalt quarry, covering around 140 hectares, brings together industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse”; the fossils document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. The historic town centre of Hachenburg in the Westerwald is another regional cultural attraction. It is characterised by restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt; the Löwenbrunnen is also part of its historic ambience.
