Udler: Discover hiking, cycling and nature
Accommodation in Udler
Hiking and cycling are natural starting points for a stay in Udler. The village has several holiday apartments and holiday homes. These accommodations are suitable for hikers and cyclists planning an active holiday in the Eifel. The maars of the Volcanic Eifel can be visited from accommodation in Udler.
Hiking and nature around Udler
Hiking trails lead from Udler towards Holzmaar, Dürres Maar and Hitsche Maar. Sangweiher is about two kilometres away on foot, between Schalkenmehren and Udler. It is both a nature and bird sanctuary and is considered an ancient maar and an important habitat for many bird species. Cormorants and the less common red kite hunt and feed there. Two birdwatching stations, hidden among the trees, are located on the shore. As well as the maars, the birdlife and protected landscape offer distinct themes to consider when planning your day.
The Manderscheid Castle Via Ferrata is located close to Udler. Its three sections can be completed individually or linked by short hiking stretches. This offers another clearly structured hiking option alongside the trails towards the maars. You can choose according to your destination and preferred division into sections, while keeping the different options distinct.
Cycling on the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route
The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route follows a former railway line past Udler. The route from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues is 58.5 kilometres long and has very few inclines. It runs through forests, past maar lakes and through the Große Schlitzohr cycle tunnel. Alongside local hiking destinations, it offers a cycling route with a specified length and its own course. When planning, you can distinguish this longer cycling route from the hiking trails leading from Udler towards individual maars.
Hiking trails in the Volcanic Eifel
The Volcanic Eifel also offers a range of hiking options. The Volcanic Eifel trails are marked and signposted; the network includes half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day treks. The trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. This premium long-distance hiking trail is 313 kilometres long, runs from Aachen-Kornelimünster to Trier and crosses the Volcanic Eifel. One stage runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. The region therefore offers day and multi-day hikes as well as a long-distance route; the Daun–Manderscheid stage provides a specific distance as a separate planning guide.
Maars and volcanic landscapes
The geological history of the Volcanic Eifel adds another dimension to its nature and hiking destinations. So far, 77 maars have been identified in the region. In addition, 350 volcanic centres have been counted, around 270 of them from a more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago.
Another regional destination is Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld. At 74 metres deep, it is considered the deepest maar in the Eifel. In summer, it is a popular place for swimming and boating. Together with the hiking trails towards Holzmaar, Dürres Maar and Hitsche Maar, it shows how varied the maar destinations within the Volcanic Eifel can be: as destinations on local hiking trails or with their own distinctive appeal, as with Pulvermaar.
