Kerschenbach: Streams, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Kerschenbach
Kerschenbach offers several points of interest for a stay: a water-based experience, hiking trails and St. Lucia Chapel as a local cultural heritage site. When choosing a destination, you can prioritize these themes according to your interests: exploring streams, trails with specific features, or architectural and religious history.
Streams and Hiking Trails
Kerschenbach’s water-based experience is located at the confluence of the Kalkerbach and Dürenbach streams. There is barrier-free access to the stream, a shelter next to the hiking trails, and child-friendly ways to explore the water. This makes the stream itself a focus of the visit, rather than merely part of the landscape.
The Kerschenbacher KB1 circular trail reaches the confluence of the Kalkerbach and Dürrbach; these two streams form the Kerschenbach. An information point along the trail is dedicated to the history of the Kerschenbach Mill. KB1 is considered family-friendly.
Walderlebnis Kerschenbach KB2 is a moderately difficult 8.1-kilometer route, with 120 meters of ascent and descent. It follows the Kalkerbach and crosses the Dürbach. A section of the route, around 400 meters long, runs alongside or on the K64 district road; watch out for traffic there. Check trail conditions and signage locally. The XXL bench installed on KB2 in 2023 offers a view over the surrounding landscape.
KB3 offers a different focus: the route provides views of Kronenburger Lake and historic Kronenburg, with its rows of medieval houses. Unlike KB2, for which the distance and elevation gain are specified, KB3 highlights views of the lake and historic buildings.
St. Lucia Chapel: Architectural History in Detail
St. Lucia Chapel complements the hiking and water themes with a local perspective on architecture and religious furnishings. The plastered rubble-stone building has a Late Gothic choir dating from the 16th century and a nave with two bays dating from 1681. Inside, the artistic features include Baroque figures on the altar, a Pietà and a star-shaped vaulted ceiling; the vault depicts the four Evangelists. For visitors interested in culture, the chapel offers a different focus from the trails: here, architectural history and furnishings take center stage.
Getting There and Practical Information
For travel without a car, bus route 541 runs from Jünkerath station to the community hall in Kerschenbach. Bus services may change; check the connection before traveling. Those arriving by car can find free parking at the community hall, Stadtkyller Straße 2.
The Vulkaneifel as a Regional Context
In the broader Vulkaneifel travel region, geological themes complement the local focus on streams and trails. To date, 77 maars have been identified there; a total of 350 volcanic vents have also been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which occurred around 10,900 years ago.
The Vulkaneifel Trails are also part of this regional context: they lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig, are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, full-day hikes and multi-day hikes.
