Horperath between the valley and the Kastelberg

Horperath lies in a broad valley in the eastern part of the Volcanic Eifel and has a landscape shaped by volcanic activity. The nearby Kastelberg rises on the edge of the village. The mountain is a tangible point of reference for understanding the area: geology and surviving fortification remains are found side by side here. Horperath is also close to the service centres of Ulmen and Kelberg, which meet everyday needs.

Basalt, terrain and a walk

The Kastelberg lies on the boundary between Horperath and Berenbach and rises about 100 metres above both villages. As a basalt peak between the two places, it reaches an elevation of 547.4 metres. It was formed from basalt-bearing lava; the rock dates from the Tertiary period. Erosion shaped a block scree slope, and a block scree forest also characterises the mountain. The combination of lava rock, slope and forest gives you concrete ways to explore the volcanic character of the area and how it has changed over time.

The Kastelberg is considered a destination for a short walk at any time of year. Check local access conditions when you arrive. This keeps the mountain’s connection to the landscape linked to a manageable idea for a walk, without implying a specific route or walking time.

Fortification remains and archaeological interpretations

Remains of a stone, circular fortification have survived at the summit. Two circular basalt ring walls enclose the summit, with an opening on the north-east side. The fortification dates from pre-Roman times. Later use by Celtic and Roman communities is assumed.

Archaeological interpretations also link finds at the Kastelberg to a possible mountain sanctuary. It may have been used intermittently until the middle of the fourth century. The surviving fortification remains and the broader interpretation of a possible sanctuary are distinct pieces of evidence. Those interested in the connection between geology and early history will find both subjects in close proximity at the Kastelberg.

Barbecue hut and practical information

Another local point of interest is the Horperath barbecue hut on the edge of the village. It is easy to reach by car; local road conditions may vary. The outdoor areas around the barbecue hut are designed to be accessible. If specific access requirements are important to you, check the facilities before your visit.

A large, enclosed hut and a covered veranda provide space even in bad weather. The open areas beneath tall trees invite you to play and relax. The barbecue hut and the Kastelberg complement the village in different ways: here, landscaped outdoor areas and covered space; there, volcanic scenery and archaeological traces.

The wider context of the Volcanic Eifel

The geological context of the wider Volcanic Eifel travel destination extends beyond Horperath. So far, 77 maars have been identified there, and 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These figures show the regional scale, while the Kastelberg is the specific point of reference near Horperath.

The hiking options across the wider Volcanic Eifel travel destination also cater to different time budgets: the Volcanic Eifel Trails are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. This is a different kind of planning from the short walk described for the Kastelberg. In Daun, the Eifel Volcano Museum displays three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. This helps place the local basalt peak in a broader geological context.
