Deudesfeld offers several ways to spend your stay: hiking trails, cycling routes and excursion destinations. If you are looking for a hotel in Deudesfeld, your planned activities can help you decide where to stay: would you like to explore on foot, cycle, or include destinations around maars, castles and museums? The options differ mainly in activity and theme. Check current conditions before setting out, as routes, trail conditions and signposting can change.

Hiking trails in and around Deudesfeld

Hiking options include routes to Meerfelder Maar and the Landesblick viewpoint, as well as the Deudesfeld panoramic circular trail. Other named trails are Speicherbach-Kurlay, Lavaweg, MĂĽhlenweg and Kids-Tierroute. If you would like to include a specific destination in your plans, the maar and viewpoint are two explicitly named hiking destinations. The panoramic circular trail is another option, alongside the other named routes.

The names alone do not tell you about a trail’s current condition. So check trail conditions and signposting before setting out. This lets you plan your day around the latest conditions rather than judging a hike by its route name alone.

Mountain biking and road cycling

Mountain bikers have direct access from Deudesfeld to the Vulkanbike Trailpark. Its network is described as comprising around 750 kilometres of signposted, bidirectional, GPS-supported mountain bike routes. When choosing a route, you can start by focusing on mountain biking; check the current route and conditions before setting out.

There are also named options for road cycling: the Kosmos-Radweg Kleine Kyll, the Maare-Mosel-Radweg and the Kylltalradweg are accessible from Deudesfeld. The local road network is considered low in traffic and suitable for road cycling. The options described therefore differ mainly by bike type: the mountain bike trail network on the one hand, and accessible cycle paths and roads for road cycling on the other.

Excursion destinations and activities

Excursion destinations from Deudesfeld include the Manderscheid castles, the Maar- und Heimatmuseum Manderscheid, Himmerod Abbey, Meerfelder Maar, Mosenberg with Windsborn Crater Lake, the Bleckhausen juniper heath nature reserve and Wallender Born. The selection brings together different themes: castles and an abbey alongside a museum, maar landscape, crater lake, juniper heath and geyser. When planning, you can choose which kinds of destinations to include in your stay.

At Meerfelder Maar, swimming in the natural bathing area and fishing are also activities associated with Deudesfeld. Access to the bathing area and swimming conditions may change seasonally. If you plan to take part in these activities, check the current conditions before your visit.

The Vulkaneifel as a wider regional setting

Across the wider Vulkaneifel destination, 77 maars have been identified to date. In addition, 350 eruption centres have been counted there, around 270 of them from a more recent phase. Ulmener Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which occurred around 10,900 years ago. Windsborn Crater Lake near Bettenfeld is the only natural crater lake north of the Alps. These figures refer to the Vulkaneifel and do not describe Deudesfeld alone.

The Vulkaneifel also offers hikes of different lengths: the Vulkaneifel Trails are marked and signposted, leading to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. They include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. The 26.2-kilometre Vulcano Trail is a circular route east of Schalkenmehren. These routes provide a separate overview of hiking options across the wider destination.

Museums and culture in the Vulkaneifel

For a themed excursion, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun displays three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on volcanism in the Western Eifel. The interactive Strohn Volcano House exhibits a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. The Natural History Museum in Gerolstein displays stone artefacts from the region’s geological history across three floors; it is considered the largest and oldest geoscience museum in the Eifel.

Other cultural and landscape destinations include the Manderscheid castles. The narrow Lieser Valley separates the two castles; together, they form part of the interplay between nature and culture there. Ulmen Castle Ruins rise above the steep shore of Ulmener Maar, and parts of the upper castle remain. These varied destinations add further Vulkaneifel themes to the local selection around Deudesfeld.
