Hiking and cycling trails in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination

In the wider Saarburg-Kell area, you can access the long-distance and circular hiking trails Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, Ruwer-Hochwald-Schleife, and Schillinger Panoramaweg. There are 492 kilometers of cycling routes in the Trier-Saarburg district. One circular route described in detail is the Tälchen-Tour: It is classified as moderate, is 37.28 kilometers long, and is estimated to take about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The route starts and ends in Konz. The Roman Theatre of Kastel-Staadt also has a 2.5-kilometer Archaeological Adventure Trail. The two distances offer a practical comparison between the circular route and the shorter archaeological trail. The Tälchen-Tour also passes the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve and recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town. Before setting out on regional trails, it’s a good idea to check the conditions and trail signage.

Roman history and landscapes

In Tawern, the Roman street settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the start of the Common Era on the Roman main road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses a model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75; in the forest, you’ll also find the large reconstructed temple complex of Tawern. The free ARGO app lets you view the complex on site at full scale and as a 360-degree augmented reality display. This brings together a scale model and a digital, full-scale depiction of the same historical subject in different ways.

Other destinations are located in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination. Part of an approximately four-meter-high cold-water pool remains at the Roman imperial palace in Konz. The former palace terrace offers views of the Moselle and Saar rivers and the surrounding mountains. In Kastel-Staadt, the Kasteler Felsenpfad leads through a red sandstone landscape with striking rock formations; there are panoramic views of the Saar Valley from the Pinschbachtal and Altfels. These destinations bring together Roman remains and a variety of landscapes.

Castles and viewpoints are also among the region’s attractions. Large sections of Saarburg Castle’s outer walls and a residential tower remain. Several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. The ruins of Freudenburg Castle date back to a castle built in the 14th century to control the military road between Trier and Metz. The region’s historical heritage thus ranges from Roman sites to a medieval castle.

Viez and regional experiences

Along the Viezstraße, fruit growers, fine fruit distillers, farmers, hoteliers, and restaurateurs offer information, regional recipes, and experiences related to Viez. This is a distinct way to experience the region’s culture, alongside its forests, cycling, and history. Together, these offerings help you explore Zerf and the wider Trier-Saarburg destination through a range of interests, without confusing the region’s excursion destinations with features of the town of Zerf itself.
