Heddert looks back on more than 1,000 years of history, rooted in the cultural landscape of the Hochwald. Its townscape is shaped by an upland landscape, detached houses and gentle slopes. St. Lawrence Chapel provides a tangible focal point for historical interest; the local landscape is the other main attraction.

St. Lawrence Chapel and its history

St. Lawrence Chapel stands on a small rock above the Kapellenbach stream and was built in 1801. Inside is an ornately gilded Baroque altar, which probably came from St. Maximin Abbey in Trier. The sacristy was added in 1929 and built from tuff stone from nearby Pluwigerhammer. St. Lawrence Church in Heddert is a Catholic branch church and a simple hall church dating from 1801. The different dates provide a brief timeline: the church was built in 1801, and the sacristy was added later.

Rest area and local history

There is a small rest area at the entrance to St. Lawrence Chapel, where you can look out over the tranquil nature of the Hochwald. This makes the view of the landscape part of the chapel’s surroundings, alongside the church building itself. Heddert’s local history also includes a gilded bell donated by Job von Nell, which bears an engraved inscription.

Hiking trails and fair

Forests, fields and hiking trails are right on your doorstep. When planning your day, you can choose between spending time outdoors and exploring St. Lawrence Chapel and local history. The St. Lawrence fair is considered one of Heddert’s annual highlights. If you would like to combine your stay with the festival, check the date and program for your planned year of travel.

Trier-Saarburg as a wider travel destination

The wider Trier-Saarburg destination brings together the landscapes of the Eifel and Hunsrück with the Moselle, Saar, Ruwer, Kyll and Sauer rivers. Hiking, cycling and waterside activities are other ways to experience the landscape there. Trier-Saarburg district has 492 kilometers of cycling routes. One specifically designated cycling option is the Tälchen Tour: it starts and ends in Konz, is 37.28 kilometers long, is rated as moderately difficult and is listed as taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes. In Saarburg, large sections of the surrounding walls and a residential tower have been preserved; several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley.
