Freudenburg appeals to travellers who want to combine nature, outdoor activities and history when choosing a destination. The Eiderberg Nature Reserve, the landscape of the Kollesleuker Schweiz and the castle ruins offer specific points of interest.

Nature and outdoor activities around Freudenburg

The 34-hectare Eiderberg Nature Reserve lies within the Serriger Bachtal and Leuk und Saar Special Area of Conservation. It is considered one of the orchid-richest areas in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its seasonal blooms are particularly associated with spring. If the orchid bloom is your main interest, plan your trip for spring.

The Kollesleuker Schweiz and the Leukbachtal in Freudenburg’s district of Kollesleuken offer opportunities for hiking among colourful sandstone formations and for mountain biking. Old mills and a narrow stream valley characterise the landscape. This makes for a different focus when planning: here, outdoor activities and scenery take centre stage, while at Eiderberg the seasonal orchid bloom is the main attraction. Trail conditions can vary seasonally; take this into account when planning your routes.

Castle ruins and a trip to the Saarschleife

Freudenburg Castle Ruins are a Gothic complex on a rocky promontory. Parts of the gate, a three-storey stone building, a palas and the remains of a round tower have survived. There is also a neck ditch, 16 metres wide and 51 metres long. The ruins’ history dates back to a castle built in the 14th century to control the military road between Trier and Metz. The surviving structures reveal the castle’s architectural features, while its history explains its purpose. If you are planning a visit, check local access arrangements.

The municipality lists the Saarschleife and its treetop walk as being 5 kilometres from Freudenburg. The walkway is 1,250 metres long and leads to the 42-metre-high observation tower. Check current access arrangements before your visit.
