Discover Nußdorf: Church Art, the Peasants’ War House and the Wine Experience Trail
Accommodation in Nußdorf
Nußdorf can be explored through a variety of cultural and natural highlights. The Protestant St. John’s Church and the Peasants’ War House represent different chapters in the village’s history; the historic village tour takes this local perspective along a circular route with explanatory information boards. For a different experience, the Landau-Nußdorf Wine Experience Trail features permanently installed sound sculptures and seasonal open-air exhibitions. When planning your trip, it is particularly useful to decide whether you want to focus on church art, the history of the Peasants’ War, or routes that combine art and landscape.
Church and Memorial Sites
The Protestant St. John’s Church dates from 1280. Its features include an Early Gothic altar and medieval wall paintings. A Roman four-god stone depicting Jupiter, Hercules, Minerva and Juno is built into the exterior at the northeast corner. This brings together medieval church furnishings and a Roman artifact. Those interested in historical details can view the different periods together: the altar and wall paintings are part of the church’s furnishings, while the four-god stone is set into the exterior masonry.
A bronze monument to the Peasants’ War, about two metres high, stands at the corner of Kirchstraße and Walsheimer Straße. It commemorates the start of the Palatinate Peasants’ War in Nußdorf in 1525. Together with the church, it represents two distinct forms of remembrance: historical evidence on the church building and a monument to a specific event.
Building History at the Peasants’ War House
The Peasants’ War House is itself part of Nußdorf’s architectural history. Built as a residence around 1500, it was rebuilt in half-timbered style on its historic foundations in 1671/1672. The two dates mark separate phases of construction. The museum floor houses the Pastor Lehmann Room, the Peasants’ War Museum and the Nußdorf Village Museum. The building thus brings together its own architectural history and three museum areas. Guided tours can be booked; if you are interested, arrange a time in advance.
Routes with Different Themes
The historic Nußdorf village tour follows a circular route with explanatory information boards that trace the village’s history. The “Around Nußdorf” route leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Odenwald, the Kraichgau and the Black Forest. The routes therefore have different focuses: the village tour explores local history, while “Around Nußdorf” leads to a landscape viewpoint spanning three named regions.
Sound and Seasonal Art on the Wine Experience Trail
The permanently installed sound sculptures along the Landau-Nußdorf Wine Experience Trail invite visitors to play them themselves. The trail also features changing seasonal open-air exhibitions by various artists. The two offerings also differ in duration: the sound sculptures are permanently installed, while the exhibitions change with the seasons. If you would like to include outdoor art or an opportunity to try something out for yourself in your itinerary, the trail offers a distinct focus alongside the historic sites.
