Birkenhördt is considered to be located in the Palatinate Forest and in the sunny Erlenbach Valley. Mountains in the Palatinate Forest surround the town; between them lie mostly natural meadows and fields. When looking for a hotel in Birkenhördt, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your trip more on the landscape and trails or on architectural and art history.

Landscape and Trails in Birkenhördt

The stream nature trail runs along the Erlenbach. Birkenhördt also has local hiking and cycling trails. This means there is a specific trail along the stream as well as other opportunities for hiking and cycling. Tennis courts are also part of the local amenities; they are set in a wooded area. The landscape of mountains, meadows and fields gives these activities a clear connection to nature, without requiring you to follow any particular route.

Church, Art and Historic Buildings

St. Gallus Parish Church is a Neo-Gothic hall church dating from 1861. Parts of the Baroque churchyard wall have been preserved. Ceiling paintings and a carved wooden high altar are further features of the church. A wooden Anna Selbdritt sculpture in Birkenhördt is dated to around 1500 and adds a distinctive art-historical note.

Near Hauptstraße 2 stands a red sandstone wayside cross dating from around 1900. A wayside chapel is also nearby: a hipped-roof building in a Baroque-inspired style, with a vestibule, dating from around 1910. The wayside shrine near Hauptstraße 49 features a relief of the Madonna of the Protective Mantle. At Hauptstraße 33, a Baroque half-timbered house bears the dates 1703 and 1931; it was renovated in 1931. The dates and different architectural styles bring local history to life through individual buildings and works of art.

Views and Seasonal Offerings

The Peace Chapel offers a view over Birkenhördt and the surrounding mountains towards the Stäffelsberg Tower. This provides another connection to nature alongside the Erlenbach and local trails. When planning your visit, you can treat the view as a focus in its own right, alongside hiking, cycling and the historic buildings.

The Birkenhördt Pumpkin Farm offers ornamental and edible pumpkins as well as homemade Palatinate specialties. Availability may vary by season; bear this in mind if you plan to include these products in your plans.
