Kamp-Bornhofen lies between Rhine kilometres 567 and 569 in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Rafting and shipping traditions, Rhine customs and festivals are part of the town’s character. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay connected to the Rhine, these themes may influence your choice, along with hiking and local history.

Rhine traditions and hiking in Kamp-Bornhofen

Kamp-Bornhofen’s connection to the river is reflected in more than just its location: the town also maintains its rafting and shipping traditions, as well as Rhine customs and festivals. This gives a stay a clear local focus. Its setting in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley adds the wider World Heritage context.

Kamp-Bornhofen is considered a starting point for varied local and regional hikes. Some trails can begin right in the town. This is a practical consideration if you would like to explore on foot during your trip: when planning, you can distinguish between routes that start in town and other local or regional hikes, without assuming a particular route profile.

Local history in two museums

The local history museum and the Rafting and Shipping Museum focus on local history and the heritage of raft builders and boatmen. Both museums explore themes that also shape the town’s traditions. If you plan to visit a museum, check current opening hours in advance.

Rhein-Lahn as a wider travel destination

The geographical description of the wider Rhein-Lahn travel destination extends beyond Kamp-Bornhofen. The part of the Rhein-Lahn district on the right bank of the Rhine includes the area around the mouth of the Lahn, the Lahn Valley up to just before Limburg near Diez, the southern foothills of the Westerwald towards the Lahn Valley, and the northern uplands of the Taunus between the Rhine and the Aar.

The UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley also offers a wider landscape context: the 65-kilometre stretch between Bingen, RĂĽdesheim and Koblenz includes historic small towns, terraced vineyards and castle ruins. The section on the right bank of the Rhine, from Kaub to Lahnstein, lies in the Rhein-Lahn district, in the Loreley Valley and within the World Heritage site. The Roman Limes also runs through the district; its remains are still visible today and form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes. Riesling grapes grow on the steep slopes of the Middle Rhine in the Loreley area and are made into high-quality wines.

Other regional cultural highlights include Marksburg Castle and Bad Ems. Marksburg Castle lies within the Loreley collective municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district and is the only medieval hilltop castle on the Middle Rhine that was never destroyed. Bad Ems preserves a historic spa ensemble with a spa house, assembly hall, villas, former hotels, churches, a spa park and historic panoramic paths. The ensemble forms the Historic Spa Town of Ems monument zone. At the Bad Ems Spa and Town Museum, you can explore the history of what was once a world-famous spa; the mining museum offers insight into the lives of miners.

Wellness and cycling are also among the activities described in the Rhein-Lahn context. The Emser Therme in Bad Ems offers wellness facilities with thermal water from healing springs and a river sauna. Around Diez, the Lahn Valley Cycle Route, the Aartal Cycle Route and a well-developed network of local cycling routes offer opportunities for cycling. Schloss Oranienstein is a sight in the Diez area. It was built in the 17th and 18th centuries as a residence for a widow; direct ancestors of the Dutch royal family once lived there. Guided tours allow you to visit the historic rooms and the Nassau-Oranien Museum. Advance registration by telephone or email is required.
