Waldbreitbach combines a rich architectural and cultural history with nativity traditions and a range of trails. When planning your stay, you can focus on the historic buildings, the seasonal nativity scenes or the routes described here. Practical details such as the landscape along the Wäller Tour W3 and the museums on the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde can also help you narrow down what you would like to see during your visit.

Church and milling history

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary dates back to a foundation by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. Only the tower has survived from that period. On the upper floor, Ionic columns divide the double arcades. Since 1983, the tower has been designated a protected cultural monument. Its construction date, surviving sections and later designation as a cultural monument mark different stages in its history.

Another historic landmark is the oil mill on the Wied. It was first licensed in 1676; the oak mechanism of the kollergang (edge runner mill) dates from its reconstruction in 1700. It is the oldest surviving oil mill of this type in the Rhineland. Visitors can also see how the mill works in a restored oil mill in Waldbreitbach. Alongside the history of the trade, the milling technology is also in focus.

Nativity scenes and the Christmas Village

The large natural-root nativity scene in the parish church of the Assumption of Mary has been set up every year since 1989. In 1998, it was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest natural-root nativity scene. It is part of a tradition that extends beyond a single exhibit: for more than 30 years, Waldbreitbach has been transformed into the Waldbreitbach Christmas Village. The whole town is decorated with Christmas attractions and numerous nativity scenes.

The Christmas Village is a seasonal highlight. As the exact dates vary from year to year, it is a good idea to check the dates for your planned visit in advance. Nativity enthusiasts will also find another point of interest outside the Christmas season: the Nativity Museum on the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde displays 2,500 nativity scenes from around the world.

Chapels and trails

At the edge of town, on the road toward Hausen and on the banks of the Wied, stands the Chapel of the Cross. Pastor Frederici had it built in 1694; it is used for church services. It complements the parish church with a second sacred site and its own architectural history.

The Wäller Tour W3 follows varied trails through forests, meadows and fields south and west of Waldbreitbach. A Kneipp pool lies directly on the route and is fed by an iron-rich mountain spring from a former ore mine tunnel. There is a free car park with public toilets on Marktstraße for the W3. Check details about the facilities before setting out; it is also a good idea to check current route information in case of temporary detours.

The Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde has more places to visit: the Handicrafts Museum is housed in a timber-framed building more than 300 years old. The Nativity Museum displays its collection of 2,500 nativity scenes from around the world. Rowing boats and pedal boats are available from a boat rental on the route; check current availability when making your plans. The two circular routes offer different highlights: the W3 features scenery and a Kneipp pool, while the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde has museums and a boat rental.

Klosterberg and pilgrimage trail

A pilgrimage trail in the Wied Valley begins at St. Marienhaus on Klosterberg, home to the Waldbreitbach Franciscan Sisters. In summer, the Klosterberg terraces and the herb and Bible garden invite visitors to take a break or join a guided tour. These activities are seasonal. If you plan to take a break or join a tour, check in advance whether access is currently possible and whether a tour is being offered. This helps you explore the town’s different highlights: architectural and milling history, nativity culture, trails and a seasonal visit to Klosterberg.
