Straßenhaus is a municipality in the district of Neuwied in northern Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach collective municipality. The municipal area includes the districts of Niederhonnefeld, Ellingen and Jahrsfeld, as well as the Jahrsfeldermühle residential area. The municipality was formed on 1 August 1966 from the municipalities of Jahrsfeld and Niederhonnefeld-Ellingen. For travel by car, the proximity to the A3 is a useful landmark; road connections and traffic conditions may change. Nature and leisure activities range from forests and viewpoints to a circular hiking route and a natural swimming pool.

Forest, ridge and views

The Straßenhaus forestry district is located in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park and the Rengsdorfer Land tourism region. The forest lies in the lower Westerwald on the first ridge east of the Neuwied Basin. From there, views extend across the Rhine Valley, the Wied Valley and the Eifel.

There are 60 giant sequoias in the municipal forest of Straßenhaus. A stand of sequoias in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park has been made accessible to visitors. The arboretum has a circular trail about 1.3 km long, with panoramic views over the Jahrsbach-Aubach Valley. The approximate distance of 1.3 km provides an indication of the loop’s length; the actual walking time depends on your individual pace.

Hiking trails and directions

The Rheinsteig and Klosterweg are premium hiking trails that cross parts of the Straßenhaus forestry district. The S3 Straßenhaus offers a different kind of tour: it is a circular hiking route that starts at the intersection of Lindenstraße and Niederhonnefelder Straße in Straßenhaus. The route crosses the Fockenbach and also includes a detour to the Alexander mine. Thus, two premium trails that cross parts of the forestry district differ from a circular route starting in Straßenhaus. Routes and trail conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Free parking is available at the market square on Niederhonnefelder Straße in Straßenhaus. Check the current parking situation before travelling, as parking regulations may change.

Natural swimming pool and market history

The Niederhonnefeld natural swimming pool began as a mill pond and became a bathing spot in the 1930s. Weather permitting, it offers swimming, paddling and relaxation in green surroundings. The natural swimming pool uses natural water that is not chemically treated. The facilities include a water play area and a covered seating area called Nixenblick. Opening times and operations may change seasonally, and the facilities may also change. Check the latest information about operations and facilities before your visit.

The Jahrsfelder Market is already mentioned in the Wied archives in 1688. Its offerings include organic agricultural products; participating vendors and the range of products may vary.
