This allows you to include impressions of local crafts, landscapes, and culture in your plans.
Crafts and Village Life in Hohn
At wool workshops at the Butzelhof sheep farm at Hohn 36 a, 53578 Windhagen, participants learn how to prepare washed raw wool for further processing using wool combs, hand carders, and a carding machine. Course dates and arrangements may change. The Butzelhof also hosts outdoor children's birthday parties with sheep to pet, feed, and cuddle; advance arrangements are required.
At Hohn's small village square, residents choose a village king or queen every year on May 1. Hohn Street is characterized by beautifully landscaped farms, renovated old buildings, and half-timbered houses with large gardens. A recurring custom with a fixed date thus sits alongside a streetscape shaped by its architecture.
Hiking Trails in the Windhagen Destination
The approximately 7 km Windhagener Weg circular trail (W2) leads from the center, near the church, along the outskirts through open fields, meadows, and patches of woodland. At the end of one stage, it reaches Windhagen-Hohn on the main road. Its approximate length gives you a specific point of reference for planning your hike. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The W1 Windhagen–Stockhauser Weg circular trail starts at the church in the center of Windhagen, leads to Stockhausen, and then loops back to the starting point. Forest and meadow paths, as well as quiet little stream valleys, characterize its route through scattered villages in the municipality and the surrounding area. While W2 offers an approximate distance and open landscapes as points of reference, W1 focuses on Stockhausen, the return to the village center, and the small stream valleys. Windhagen also has numerous well-marked hiking trails connecting to long-distance and main hiking routes such as the Rheinsteig and Westerwaldsteig.
Architectural History and Historic Routes
The Holy Trinity Chapel in Hallerbach had already been completely renovated by 1450 and is probably considerably older. Its white-plastered structure, about 6 m long, ends in three sides of an octagon; a slate-roofed bell turret sits above the gabled roof. The 50 kg bronze bell was cast by Schippang in Neuwied in 1852. The Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew in Windhagen was built in 1869–1870 to simplified plans by Vincent Statz of Cologne and forms the center of the village. The dates refer to different events: the complete renovation of the chapel and the construction of the parish church.
Since 2018, information signs at eight locations across the municipal area have marked stops along the “Hiking Trail of History and Stories.” They explain the significance and history of the monuments at each location; the signs may be updated over time. The wider Windhagen destination is also home to a former silver mine just outside Birkens. The entrances to the tunnels, dug around 1790, are still clearly visible. Information boards stand on the old Günterscheid path below the fishpond complex.
