Nitztal: Hiking Trails, Views and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Nitztal
Nitztal offers several hiking trails and a permanent timed cycling route. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Nitztal, it helps to consider the activities you have planned: the trails differ in length, scenery and route; the cycling route also has timing, elevation gain and gradient to consider. This makes it possible to plan your stay around the specific tours.
Hiking Trails in Nitztal
The Almenackerweg is a circular trail about 2.5 kilometres long, while the Panoramaweg Nitztal covers 7.9 kilometres. Both start and finish at the Schützenstraße car park in Nitztal. The Panoramaweg leads from Nitztal through a quiet forest and up to Bleiberg. From Schälkopf, you can look down on Nitztal. Bleiberghütte is on the route and can be rented for barbecues in summer.
The Nitzblickrunde leads from the centre of Nitztal up to Steinbüchel, which reaches 524 m above sea level. From there, you can enjoy a view of the Nitz Valley; the route is suitable for families with children. The Bürresheimrunde also leads to Steinbüchel and offers views over the Nitz Valley on the ascent. The Nitzblickrunde connects its starting point in the village centre with the high point, while the Bürresheimrunde focuses on the views during the climb.
Streams and vegetation also shape other trails: on the return to Nitztal, the Schlossweg follows the small Nitzbach stream. The Eifeltraum between Kürrenberg and Nitztal combines hillside forest with open fields and meadows. The Finnenhütte, with its barbecue area, is on the Steinbachweg. The Bendisberg Mine, a visitor mine, is about 700 metres from the St. Joster Weg.
Cycling and Route Profile
The Nitztal hill-climb time trial is a permanent timed cycling route. It starts in Mayen-Nitztal and ends in Kirchwald. The route is about 2.5 kilometres long, with around 240 metres of elevation gain and an average gradient of about 5 percent. The start station is at the junction of St.-Johanner-Straße and Kirchwalder Straße in Nitztal. This cycling tour can therefore be assessed using different criteria from the hiking trails: in addition to distance, timing, elevation gain and gradient are specified.
Mayen: Castle, Culture and City Tours
In Mayen, Genovevaburg Castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the market square and is considered the town’s landmark. The late-Gothic complex consists of an upper castle with the 34-metre-high Goloturm and a lower-lying outer ward. Genovevaburg houses the EifelTotal and German Slate Mine exhibitions of the Eifel Museum. Much of Mayen’s town wall has been preserved; a restored battlement walk is accessible all the way to Genovevaburg.
Every summer, the Mayen Castle Festival transforms Genovevaburg in the heart of Mayen into a venue for theatre, music and socialising. In the summer months, the courtyard of the Old Detention Centre also becomes an open-air venue for theatre, music and other cultural events. The Old Detention Centre was built in 1880 and extended in 1904; today it serves as a home for art and culture.
A historical guided tour of Mayen lasts around 90 minutes and takes you through the town centre; town walks are available on request. With the Hearonymus app, you can start a digital tour of Mayen whenever you like and play information about the sights. This lets you choose between a guided tour and a self-started digital walk in Mayen.
