Kreuzhof offers three clearly distinct starting points for planning a trip: local history whose origins are partly presumed, a cycling route, and the rotating village café at Münchwaldhütte. You can use these to decide whether you are more interested in historical development, a specifically named sequence of paths and places, or a café visit. For the village café, checking the date is part of planning; the route can be understood through its sequence of Kreuzhof, Heimkirchen, and Niederkirchen.

History and origin of the name

The name Kreuzhof is presumed to derive from its location at important crossroads, where many crosses once stood. The origins of the settlement are also presented as a presumption: Kreuzhof probably developed in the 15th century around a small chapel at a crossroads. An inn and farms were soon added. In the 16th century, important regional fairs were held there three times a year. The chapel, inn, agriculture, and fairs mark different aspects of the settlement’s early history.

Two distinct historical associations belong to later dates. In 1551, Kreuzhof was assigned to the Lutheran parish of Heimkirchen. In 1566, Kreuzhof passed together with Heimkirchen to Franz Conrad von Sickingen, and thus under the rule of Schallodenbach. The dates therefore refer, in sequence, to an ecclesiastical affiliation and a relationship of lordship.

Cycling route and café stop

The “Odenbachtal / Meisenheim / Callbach / Alte Römerstraße” cycling route continues past Felsbergerhof to Kreuzhof. From there, it follows a farm track towards Heimkirchen and back to Niederkirchen. This sequence helps you place Kreuzhof along the route as described: after Felsbergerhof comes Kreuzhof, followed by the stretch towards Heimkirchen and back to Niederkirchen.

The rotating village café stops at Münchwaldhütte on Kreuzhof on the fifth Sunday in October. Check the date before your trip, as the café is part of a rotating local program. It offers a place to stop for visitors from outside the area who are exploring the hiking trails in the municipality of Niederkirchen. This way, you can plan the café visit as a separate item rather than assuming it will be open without checking the date.

Geology at Kreuzhof

East of Niederkirchen, at Kreuzhof, a limestone bed in the Jeckenbach Subformation is formed as a stromatolite. This geological feature adds a specific rock formation to the local history. If you are interested in the history of the Earth, this offers a distinct point of interest alongside the dates relating to the chapel, fairs, and historical affiliations.

Niederkirchen as a broader regional context

The wider destination of Niederkirchen offers further, independent points of interest. In the old center of Niederkirchen stands a Protestant church built in 1723. The start and finish of the Five Mountains Tour is the parking lot at Westpfalzhalle in the sports and recreation center at 2, 67700 Niederkirchen. In 2022, a pump track was built at the sports and recreation center on an area of 1,600 square meters, providing a cycling course.

In the district of Wörsbach, the Wörsbach Adventure Trail is a family walking trail almost four kilometers long, suitable for all age groups. Its play areas and activity stations include a bouncy castle, a sound game, and ladder golf. In Heimkirchen, a circular hiking trail leads from the village center via the nature trail and Weidenbrunnen to the walkable sundial on Reiserberg. These routes offer different kinds of trails and experiences within the wider destination of Niederkirchen.

The Pfleger family’s agricultural museum at Holbornerhof is also part of this context. Housed in a former barn, it presents 100 years of agricultural history across five levels. The Rauschermühle quarry between Niederkirchen and Wörsbach offers another geological point of interest: palatinit was quarried there, formed by volcanic activity just under 300 million years ago. Quarrying ended in late 1966; today, the quarry is an important geological site and a protected biotope. The limestone bed at Kreuzhof and the palatinit at Rauschermühle are therefore two distinct geological topics within the wider destination of Niederkirchen.
