There are several themes to explore during a stay in Winden: historic buildings, the railway’s former role, the stork trail and the orchards in spring. These highlights provide a starting point for deciding whether you would like to focus mainly on local history, the white stork or the seasonal landscape.

Buildings, history and working life

The Night Watchman’s House was built in 1823; its original interior dates from the first half of the 20th century. The Protestant church was built in 1745 in the Baroque style. It contains a late Gothic baptismal font from the former chapel, which was rediscovered in 1920. A Baroque church building and an older furnishing, each with its own historical context, stand side by side. The town hall adds to the area’s architectural history: it was built in 1759 as a simple half-timbered house and was already serving as the town hall by 1760.

The Winden Local History Museum focuses on rural working life and displays agricultural tools and equipment. The exhibition also includes tools and objects from traditional trades, including saddlery, wagon making, wooden shoe making and shoemaking. The collection is displayed behind glass and can be viewed at any time, day or night. While the historic buildings mainly reveal when they were built and how they were once used, the museum turns the focus to agriculture and crafts.

Rail connections and railway history

Winden is a regional railway hub. There is a park-and-ride facility on the west side of the station for switching from road to rail. A direct train connection runs from Winden to Wissembourg in Alsace. Check the connections and access to the facility before your trip.

The railway is also part of the town’s history: by November 26, 1855 at the latest, the Maximilian Railway was operating via Winden to Weißenburg. Historically, Winden was also a stop for international express trains to Switzerland and France; customs formalities were carried out at the station. The former express trains and customs procedures are historical aspects of the railway station. For travel planning, however, current connections are what matter, so check the timetables before setting off.

Stork trail and orchards

The Stork Trail is an approximately four-kilometer themed trail in Winden that explores the lives of white storks. An observation platform offers views of stork nests. Since August 2025, an interactive rally has covered the entire trail, combining nature experiences with quiz questions, photo challenges and creative tasks. This offers several ways to engage with the stork theme: observing nests and taking part in activities along the trail.

In spring, the orchards around Winden come into bloom with cherry and apple blossoms. You can enjoy them along the Riesling-Zander Cycle Route and the Farm-to-Farm Cycling Tour. Check the routes and their names before setting out. Farm shops are also part of the local offering, selling locally produced goods in Winden. If you are looking for a particular product, check in advance whether it is available. The blossoms are a seasonal highlight; local history and the stork trail offer separate themes for planning your trip.
