Church and Architectural History

St. Rochus Church is a Neo-Gothic hall church built of red sandstone ashlar, constructed in 1876/77. St. Rochus features wall paintings and retaining walls with a staircase. The Klais organ was built in 1907 and has been preserved in its original condition. The church also houses an 18th-century statue of St. Rochus with a staff and a dog. The architecture and furnishings therefore bring together several periods: the statue dates from the 18th century, the church from 1876/77 and the organ from 1907.

A wayside chapel stands at the intersection of Kapellenstraße and Zemmerer Straße. It probably dates from the 18th or early 19th century; the niche cross may date from the 16th century. The former girls’ school, an ashlar building made of yellow and red sandstone dating from 1876/77, is one of Orenhofen’s sights. A war memorial from 1968/69 stands in the cemetery. The church and the former schoolhouse date from the same period, providing a shared point of reference for the town’s history.

Historical Traces and Events

Finds from the Stone Age, Roman period and Frankish period reach far back into Orenhofen’s past. Pottery fragments attest to Roman potteries in Orenhofen. A pipe kiln produced clay pipes until the first half of the 20th century; an excavation of a Frankish burial ground is another sight. These traces span early finds, Roman craftsmanship and production that continued into more recent history.

The Rochus festival is celebrated every year on August 16; the Rochus fair follows on the next Sunday. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the current event dates, as the annual schedules may change.
