When choosing a destination, specific interests can provide a helpful guide. In Lichtenborn, St. Servatius Parish Church and local hiking trails offer different focal points. Near Lichtenborn are Lichtenborner Höhe and the Black Cross; riding lessons are offered in Kopscheid, a district of the municipality.

St. Servatius Parish Church and Neo-Gothic Architecture

The present parish church was built from 1895 to 1897 on the site of a dilapidated predecessor building. The plans were drawn up by Gelsenkirchen architect Lambert von Fisenne. The church stands on federal highway 410 at the northeastern edge of Lichtenborn.

St. Servatius is a three-bay hall church with a narrower, three-sided polygonal choir and a western tower in Neo-Gothic forms. The four-storey tower is 40 metres high. There are small annexes on both sides of the choir. The building’s form, choir and tower are therefore concrete features of the church, in addition to its construction history.

The interior is also designed in the Neo-Gothic style: it has a ribbed vault and ornamental ceiling paintings in the Neo-Gothic style. Those interested in church architecture will find information here both about the origins of the present building and about distinctive details of its design.

Hiking Trails and Nearby Points of Interest

Lichtenborn has local hiking trails with a total length of 30 kilometres. They are marked with white numbers or letters on a blue background. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current trail markings and conditions.

Lichtenborner Höhe, at 569 metres, lies north of Lichtenborn and offers panoramic views. About 1.5 kilometres to the south, the Black Cross, made of sandstone, stands in a spruce forest and is associated with legends and stories. The two points of interest offer different highlights: the panoramic view from the hill and, in the forest, the cross and its storytelling tradition.

More to Explore in Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm

At the level of the wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm, there are further distinct themes: mining history in Bleialf, palaeontology in Waxweiler, military history at the Westwall Museum, and historic domestic culture in Rittersdorf.

The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine includes a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area’s mining history. Hour-long guided tours through the tunnel explain ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. Check seasonal opening information and tour dates in advance.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. This gives it a different focus from the visitor mine’s technical and historical themes.

The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker. An exhibition on military history is displayed in underground corridors and rooms. The exhibition thus combines the bunker complex with a specific historical subject.

The water castle of Rittersdorf, around 700 years old, has been preserved almost unchanged since it was built and offers a vivid picture of late-medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. The castle also houses a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine. Check whether the restaurant is open before your trip.
