Ernzen lies on the south side of the Ferschweiler Plateau. When looking for a hotel, it helps to distinguish local attractions in Ernzen from other visitor attractions in the wider travel destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm. In Ernzen, Felsenweiher and traces of Roman settlement provide specific points of interest. The following destinations range from landscape and history to paleontology and culture, helping you organize your interests for your stay.

Felsenweiher: Landscape and History

Felsenweiher is located on the outskirts of Ernzen, at the entrance to the Gutenbachtal valley. The spring-fed pond is surrounded by rock walls, alcoves, and caves; terraces, pools, stairs, and bridges are also part of the complex. Its present form combines the natural setting with a history of human intervention: in the second half of the 19th century, Pastor Philipp Meyer had natural sandstone grottoes and cavities transformed into the pond complex. Felsenweiher is freely accessible at all times. Its surroundings are used for concerts and other cultural events. If you are planning a visit for a concert, check the event dates in advance.

Roman Traces and Earth History

A historical trace in Ernzen can be found on Messeweg: evidence of a Roman settlement has been discovered there, and remains of a Roman sanctuary were found in 1965. The Dinosaurierpark Teufelsschlucht, which covers a much broader span of time, is a separate attraction. It features more than 180 life-size reconstructions, mostly of extinct species, spanning more than 600 million years of Earth’s history. The nearly two-kilometer circular trail traces the development of life from the first land animals to modern humans. At the PaleoLab, visitors can learn about current excavations and research projects. The contrast between the Roman traces on Messeweg and the park’s vast timeline offers two clearly distinct historical perspectives.

Trails and Getting There

There is no direct public transport connection to Felsenweg 6. Drivers can use the Felsenweiher car park on Flurstraße in Ernzen. As traffic conditions can change, it is advisable to check routes before setting out. Another route description concerns the Teufelsschlucht hiking trail: it connects the Irreler Wasserfälle and the Prüm rapids via a suspension bridge. For your planning, different details are therefore relevant: the lack of a direct connection to Felsenweg 6 and the destinations named along the Teufelsschlucht route.
