Gondenbrett: Crosses, Church and Views
Accommodation in Gondenbrett
With Gondenbrett as your destination, you can include cultural history, architecture and outdoor activities in your plans. Highlights range from historic crosses and a village church to panoramic views, paddling and winter sports.
Crosses and Procession History
The Münsterberg Cross stands at a site with a history dating back 500 years. The Gondenbrett Plague Cross was also erected on Münsterberg as a reminder of a disaster. The two crosses have different points of focus: the Münsterberg Cross centers on the site's long history, while the Plague Cross commemorates the disaster.
The Gondenbrett Cross was the destination of many pilgrimages and processions. During the Erasmus Procession, the route followed seven Stations of the Cross to the Münsterberg Cross. This brings together a wide-ranging procession history and a specific route with a named destination.
St. Dionysius and the Ossuary Memorial
St. Dionysius is located in Marienpark and is the center of the village. The parish church was built in the mid-19th century in exposed masonry and is in the post-Neoclassical style. The construction period provides a chronological context; exposed masonry describes the construction, while the style term identifies its architectural classification. Material and style can therefore be considered as distinct features.
The Gondenbrett Ossuary Memorial stands beside a section of the Way of St. James that runs from Gondenbrett to Prüm. The memorial has been partially restored and now features art by Sebastian Langner. The route and the memorial remain clearly distinct: the section of the route connects the places mentioned, while the restoration and artwork belong to the ossuary.
Panoramas and Outdoor Activities
From the Katzenkopf Eifel Viewpoint, the panorama extends across the Schneifel ridge, the Islek plateau and the Prüm Limestone Basin. The viewing platform was built on a blown-up Westwall bunker; panoramic information boards and benches are also part of the viewpoint. This combines views of three landscape areas with a specific structural connection to the Westwall.
In the Mehlental area, paddling on the Wascheid Reservoir is one option. Winter sports are offered on Schwarzer Mann Mountain, which is 697 meters high. Two different types of activity are available when planning your trip: paddling and winter sports. Check the relevant conditions before making plans if one of these activities is essential to your trip.
