Daleiden lies in the Islek region, 6.6 kilometers from the Luxembourg border, and is a state-recognized resort. Two main themes can help guide your choice of stay: hiking through forests and along streams, and places of remembrance and local tradition. The “Ginsterheiden im Irsental bei Daleiden” nature reserve adds its own focus on nature and conservation.

Hiking and Nature Conservation in Daleiden

The Naturpark-Südeifel hiking trail No. 03 is a moderately difficult circular route, 14.1 kilometers long. It follows the Heimbach and Mühlbach streams and runs through forest for much of its length. The distance, difficulty rating and route profile answer different planning questions: How long is the tour, how difficult is it considered, and what landscape features define it? If you include the hike in your stay, you can use this information to assess the time required and the demands it will place on your fitness.

The trail can be navigated using a Swiss-Trac wheelchair power attachment. If you would like to use one, check its availability in advance.

The “Ginsterheiden im Irsental bei Daleiden” nature reserve covers 76 hectares and is located within the municipal districts of Daleiden, Irrhausen and Olmscheid. Its conservation purpose includes preserving fossil-bearing sediment layers for scientific and natural history reasons.

Places of Remembrance and Local Tradition

With more than 3,000 people killed in the Second World War buried there, the war cemetery in Daleiden is the largest cemetery of honor in Rhineland-Palatinate. At the entrance, visitors can consult, among other things, lists of the fallen in the information building. The total number conveys the scale of this place of remembrance, while the lists draw attention to individual names.

Along the accessible Comfort Path Daleiden, an information board uses legends and illustrations to tell visitors about the Willibrord Fountain, named after Saint Willibrord. While the war cemetery is dedicated to remembering the fallen, the board shares a local tradition associated with the fountain. Daleiden also hosts a traditional Christmas market that is popular with locals and visitors. If you would like to include the market in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
