If you are looking for a hotel in Lohnsfeld, the landscapes and cultural attractions of the wider destination of Donnersbergkreis may also be useful when planning your trip. The region offers a range of points of interest, from wooded hills and hiking trails to Celtic history, mining, and viticulture. The examples below vary in their routes, landscapes, and themes.

Donnersberg and hiking trails

At 687 meters, Donnersberg is the highest elevation in the Palatinate. The area covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely forested, and stretches diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometers. If you would like to compare specific hiking routes, Donnersbergkreis has circular trails of varying lengths: the Ludwigsturm circular trail is 6.7 kilometers long, starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels, and leads to Ludwigsturm. The tower itself is a 26.9-meter-high stone tower with 142 steps, but it is currently closed for renovation work.

The Ruine Wildenstein circular trail leads to the castle ruins and is 7.9 kilometers long. It is therefore longer than the Ludwigsturm circular trail; the two routes also differ in their destinations. Donnersberg is a popular hiking destination. For a multi-day tour, the Pfälzer Höhenweg starts in Winnweiler at Donnersberg and leads through the Palatinate Uplands to Wolfstein in seven stages.

Celts, castle ruins, and mining history

The region’s history can be seen at various sites and across different periods. The Celtic rampart consists of the covered remains of a Celtic wall about 8.5 kilometers long. From around 130 to 60/50 BC, it encircled a Celtic oppidum on Donnersberg. The Celtic village at Donnersberg in Steinbach is a traditionally built farmstead settlement that offers an impression of Celtic house-building techniques. It is currently temporarily closed for renovation work; the expert-guided tours and changing hands-on activities are also tied to this site.

Falkenstein Castle ruins stand on a former volcanic vent and were first documented in 1135. The surrounding area provides a backdrop for the annual Christmas market and the Falkenstein summer tours. If you plan to attend either event, check the relevant dates. The Weiße Grube visitor mine offers a different historical perspective: its extensive tunnel system reveals traces of 600 years of mining, including medieval extraction areas and later mine workings excavated with explosives. The Palatinate Mining Museum in Imsbach explores the region’s ores, rocks, and fossil fuels, as well as the extraction and processing of iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and mercury.

Eiswoog, railway, and cycling routes

Eiswoog lies in the Palatinate Forest–Vosges du Nord Biosphere Reserve and is considered a natural spectacle throughout the year. Activities there include boating, walking through water, swimming, and hikes around the lake with a nature trail. A paved, accessible path passes an observation platform overlooking the lake. Eiswoog can be reached from Eisenberg by train, by bicycle through the forest, or by car.

The Stumpfwaldbahn also connects various regional points of interest: its approximately four-kilometer narrow-gauge line uses converted former mining locomotives for journeys between Kleehof and Eiswoog. Passengers can board at Eiswoog, at Bockbachtal station near Kleehof, or at Ramsen West. For cyclists, Eiswoog is a stopping point on the Barbarossa Cycle Route. This route crosses the Palatinate from the Rhine near Worms, via Kaiserslautern, to Glan-MĂĽnchweiler near Kusel. For a different kind of ride, try the mountain-bike singletrack in the forest near Sippersfeld: there, you can ride over sections of exposed roots and red sandstone boulders on either a more challenging or a gentler line.

Viticulture and Weingut Bremer

The Zellertal is one of the northernmost wine-growing areas in the Palatinate. There are opportunities to enjoy local wines and discover wineries. Weingut Bremer offers wine tastings, a restaurant, and an event venue in a historic winery. As opening hours may vary, it is a good idea to check the latest information before visiting. This adds wine and dining to the regional experience, depending on your interests, while hiking, landscapes, history, and cycling are other themes to keep in mind during your stay.
