Explore Traben-Trarbach through a range of themes: Art Nouveau and other architectural styles, museums, historic wine cellars, and nature experiences on foot or by bike. Moselle boat trips also connect the two parts of town. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay—from architecture and exhibitions to tours and wine.

Discover architecture and history

The townscape features a concentration of Art Nouveau and Belle Époque buildings, complemented by Baroque, Neoclassical and Moselle-style architecture. Important historic sights include the Bridge Gate, the ruins of Grevenburg Castle, Mont Royal Fortress and Trarbach’s museum district. The different architectural styles and sites offer a variety of historical points of interest to explore.

The restored Old Town Tower is a prominent surviving part of Trarbach’s medieval fortifications. From its viewing platform, you can look out over the rooftops of the twin town. The tower also houses a collection of historic fireplace, tile and stove panels from the nearby Mittelmosel Museum. Its carillon consists of 28 bronze bells and is considered the largest in the Moselle region. Views, architectural history and the collection come together here in one place, without any one of these themes replacing another.

Museums and special insights

The Time Travel Museum displays historic and iconic bicycles, as well as accessories such as carbide lamps and head badges. It also features a restored collection of dolls, dollhouses and antique toys, alongside an area devoted to the 1950s, with furniture, technology and fashion. Antique railways, stations and tracks are also part of the exhibits. Visitors interested in everyday history will find several distinct collections here.

Guided tours of the Traben-Trarbach underworld offer a different perspective on the town’s history. They take visitors through selected historic wine cellars and explain historic winemaking, cellar technology, the wine trade and local cellar operations. Some cellars also host wine tastings and culinary events. Strausswirtschaften are wine-growing businesses that serve their own wines with small regional dishes. Their opening times are seasonal and may change; check the relevant dates before visiting.

Trails, thermal baths and Moselle boat trips

Traben-Trarbach offers nature experiences on foot and by bike. Two named routes can be compared by distance and estimated time: the Elfenpfad Bad Wildstein is a moderately difficult hike of around four kilometres, with an estimated duration of two hours. Zippammers Welt is a moderately difficult nature education and adventure trail of around 8.6 kilometres; the estimated duration is two hours and 37 minutes. The Elfenpfad is therefore the shorter of the two routes, while both are rated as moderately difficult.

The Moseltalschanzen Route passes the Rote Quellen and the Elfenpfad before reaching the Moseltherme Traben-Trarbach. Take care when crossing a road along the route. The Moseltherme offers a 2,000-square-metre water and steam area, as well as a sauna complex; it also provides views of the vineyards around Traben-Trarbach. When planning your trip, you can choose between a specific route and a distinct thermal spa experience.

The Traben-Trarbach audio tour can be followed independently, at your own pace and without a guide. Moselle boats call at both parts of town. Boat connections and departure schedules may vary seasonally; check the latest information before your trip. When planning, you can decide whether to devote your time to an independent tour, a guided cellar visit, a museum visit or a boat trip on the Moselle.
